Expo 2017

Postby NicolasB » Thu Mar 09, 2017 8:56 pm

Hi,
I'm planning a visit to Astana just to visit the city and (2 days) the expo2017 (https://expo2017astana.com/en/) between June 21st and June 24th 2017. Anyone interested in joining me ?
I'm a frequent traveller to Expos, living in Belgium.

The timing wouldn't work for us - but I'm curioius about the Expo - what are they like? I've only ever seen the empty sites long after the event!

Hi Nicolas,

I would love to join you but cannot say when I will visit, it could be later, my travel plans are still unsure. In any case, your perspective as a frequent Expo visitor would be highly appreciated. Do you write about or document your Expo travels?

Hi,
nice to see two rapid reactions. The expo experience depends on what the organizing country makes of it.
There are different types of expos or 'expo-endorsed events'.
To summarize, there are 'big' and 'small' expos.

The big ones are organised once every 5 years, run for 6 months, expect millions of visitors, and most importantly, the participating countries build their own 'pavillions'. The architecture of these pavillions is sometimes really very creative, and it is a pleasure for anyone into design or architecture to look at the extreme variation of styles and techniques. In these big expos, the pavillions can sometimes contain 3D cinemas, rides, cable cars, interactive exhibitions, restaurants, ... Apart from the pavillions by country, there are usually 'central' thematic pavillions, which are in fact huge purpose build 'experience musea'. The last such Expo was at Milano in Italy in 2015, and the next one will be in Dubai in 2020. Previous expos of this style (and which I visited) were held in Shanghai (PRC), Hannover (Germany), Sevilla (Spain), ...

The small ones are organized in between the bigger ones. The duration is more like 4 months. The host country builds new expo-halls, later to be reused as fairgrounds or as a venue for conventions. They then subdivide the expo-halls in units that are occupied by the participating countries. The museum-technology is often less advanced then in the big expos. The pavillions are smaller and do not have a country-specific architecture. There can also be thematic pavillions, but more modest.

The host city usually benefits from the expo event in the sense that an overhaul of the airport, public transport system, hotels, ... is organised. The expo grounds are often re-used afterwards, to make it economically and ecologically more acceptable. A good example is the expo in 1998 in Lisbon, where the expo grounds were reused for new city development. A bad example is Sevilla (1992), where the expo grounds remained a deserted area for years after the event.

I don't consider myself a specialist, just an enthousiastic visitor having visited around 7 expos, but not the rapid 'one day visit', rather the 3 to 6 day visit to absorb the atmosphere in almost every pavillion.
