Kyrgyzstan to India passing KKH

Post by brancosoergjev »

Hey!

I'll be travelling from Kyrgyzstan to India in a few months and was actually planning on entering Pakistan around mid December. I know this isn't the best period to go, weather wise.
Anybody have some tips for me concerning road conditions due to this period, open borders, or closed one's, if the road will even be open! Guide thru China?

Anything will be helpful, Thanks!

From http://caravanistan.com/border-crossings/pakistan/

Khunjerab pass: The border crossing is officially opened from April 1st until 30th of November, but closure can happen earlier due to weather conditions or landslides.

Hi Steven,

well, that sorts out a lot.... No more passing the boarder this year!
My first source told me it was open until half December.
Thanks for your input!

Does anybody know if special permits or something like this are needed for travelers to cross the pass?
How is transportation working is there a public transport from Kaxgar? Can I just hitch hike or do I even need a guide in China?

There is a daily bus from Tashkurgan to Sost, which you must take. The crossing is closed on weekends. That's pretty much all. To and from these cities you can travel any way you like.

If you are traveling close to winter, have backup plan, as the weather may not adhere to official opening/closing dates ;)
