Selling a car in Kyrgyzstan.... contacts?

Postby ustrasse » Tue Nov 04, 2014 7:08 am

We've just arrived in Bishkek with the intent of continuing our trip by land through China. We're looking to sell our lovely little VW Golf III, either to someone who wants to drive back to Europe, or to a dealer who can help us with the import paperwork.

Does anyone have any contacts in Bishkek or Kyrgystan who could help? Or does anyone have any experience doing this? Someone else online mentioned the owner of the "Nomad's Home" hostel, and a car market in the north of Bishkek, but this is very old information.

The car market is where you need to be - find Location here http://caravanistan.com/transport/driving/kyrgyzstan/

Perhaps the boss of Iron Horse Nomads might be able to help - an American with a deep knowledge of cars in Kyrgyzstan called Ryan Hornung.

Fantastic! Thanks for the info. :) My husband has been searching in German and apparently there are a few blogs about people who did it within the past few years. Hopefully it won't take too long!

Just wanted to update about this, since we "successfully" sold our car last weekend. I wrote about it in detail on our website (in my signature), but the basic rundown is:

The easiest place to sell a used car is at Autorynok Azamat, NOT Kudaybergen Market. Azamat is the massive Saturday/Sunday auto bazaar, while Kudaybergen is essentially one big scrapyard. For Azamat, you just roll up with your shiny car and a sign saying how much you want for it. Depending on the type of vehicle, you'll probably be quickly swamped with interested people. I'm not 100% sure, but I think there is an office inside the market that can handle import and registration paperwork as well. If you have more time and speak Russian, I think you could probably do ok by posting an ad on one of the car bazaar websites as well.

Make sure the buyer knows the deal with deregistration and importation. Most people don't understand the time, effort, money, and paperwork involved. We had one potential buyer spooked off by the $2,500 customs tax. The actual buyer of our car didn't understand that we needed the original car documents back to deregister the car.

If you don't have export plates, find out how to deregister your car far in advanced. In our situation, we discovered that the German embassy does not handle deregistrations, and the municipality we registered the vehicle in requires the car documents AND license plates to be sent in. From Kyrgyzstan this cost us 5000 som through DHL.

If you don't import it yourself, realise that the buyer might not do it either. We sold our car for a bargain price under the terms "buyer pays customs tax", with the hopes that the buyer would be happy to front the cash and go through the import process, giving us some paper to show at the border when we exit that alleviates us of our customs responsibilities. In reality we have no idea what the guy is going to do with it. He could sell it for scrap, and they'd just shave off the serial numbers. He could import it later. He could drive it himself with some spare Kyrgyz license plates. He could sell it to someone else and have them import it. But as of now we have no clue.

We're leaving the country tomorrow and have a copy of the notarised bill of sale with our (my husband's) and his (the buyer's) full names, a copy his passport/driver's license, and his contact details. Hoping that this will be enough for customs if we do get asked about the car on the way out.

We get absolutely invaluable advice from Ryan at Iron Horse Nomads. He's got a car importation service and could help sell your vehicle for a commission--worth consideration if you want to do more with your time in Kyrgyzstan than hang around at car bazaars. My biggest piece of advice would be to find someone who speaks Kyrgyz or Russian if you don't.

From 2015 Kyrgyzstan is joining the Russian Customs Union, which means the import duties on used cars is going to skyrocket. As of next year Kyrgyzstan will probably no longer be the best place to sell your used overland chariots, but people are definitely gobbling up "fresh" (non-imported) cars now.

Hope this info is helpful!

Hi! We are travelling from Spain to Kirguistán with our Volkswagen Golf GTI, year 93, without backseats but a great bed instead! The car is going perfect!
Can anyone give us a recent advice about how to sell the car once there? More specificaly, in terms of taxes and paperwork needed to leave the country without the car, and without any problems.
In case anyone is interested in buying the car, or even drive back to Europe with our car, please let us know.
Thanks!!
