South Kazakhstan: well-known for its historical artifacts and beautiful nature on the border with Uzbekistan. None of the attractions here are too far removed from Shymkent in the center, and accommodation is plentiful with anything from homestays to 5-star hotels, so it’s a perfect place for that perfect traveler, who knows not where he goes, not even where he came from.
Highlights: Aksu-Zhabagly reserve (entry in Zhabagly), Sayram mausoleums, mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, Sayram-Ugam reserve (entry in Lenger), Sauran ruined city, Otrar ruined city, Arystanbap mausoleum.
There is more to see and do, this much I know, but these places have not been written about anywhere yet, known only to locals, so it’s up to us (to you?) to discover it. We’ll get back to you as soon as we know more. In the meantime, this itinerary can keep you interested for anywhere between 2 days and 2 weeks.
