The best place for ice skating in Almaty is Medeu, the open air ice rink in the mountains. There are also some other options, if you are really keen.
Medeu is the highest skating rink in the world. Its unique location makes its ice superglidey, and Medeu has a lot of world records and skating history attached to its name.
If you are in Almaty in winter, Medeu is one attraction you cannot miss. Skating in the winter sunshine surrounded by mountains and fir trees, spurred on by Russian pop music: it doesn’t get any better.
In summertime, the ice skating rink transforms into a sports arena with courts for hockey, basketball, mini-football, volleyball, a skate park and a bouncy castle for little kids.
Adults: 1800 tenge
Students: 800 tenge (if you look young enough and wave any kind of ID this will work as a foreigner)
School children: 400 tenge
If you don’t have your own transport and don’t want to hire a car, bus number 6 leaves every half hour in front of the Hotel Kazakhstan and goes up all the way to Medeu along Dostyk avenue.
Alternatively, you can rent a bicycle. It’s a good work-out to cycle all the way up. Take 2 hours to get there if you are in average shape.
Other skating rinks
Other places to go skate are at the Luxor Spa, also on Dostyk, near the Royal Tulip Hotel. A big indoor ice surface for a reasonable price.
For kids, there are small skating rinks inside the Mega and Ramstor malls.
