If you are just standing by the side of the road and need a quick ride around the city, just extend your hand and a gipsy cab will stop within a few seconds. Prices are low with these inofficial taxis, ranging from 1 to 3 USD for a ride, depending on how far you want to go.
If you are looking for an official taxi, prices are similar nowadays. Not all of them give receipts, so ask for that in advance if you want one.
When it comes to the official taxis, be sure to have the exact amount of money ready, as the taxi driver might not give change. Some taxi services have you pay an extra fee simply for ordering them, regardless of where you are driving, it will add a few dollars to your bill. If you are not willing to pay for a luxury car, explicitly ask for budget car, as some companies tend to push a luxury brand car on you and then charge you more for comfort.
There are Uber-style taxi-apps as well. Try Uber, Yandex Taxi, Indriver or Rutaxi Here, you can order taxis with pre-settled price, and you usually don’t have to speak Russian or call a taxi company. It will provide you with the number of the taxis license plate, and on a little map you can see the car’s GPS and track when it has arrived to pick you up.
