Shymkent is the capital of South Kazakhstan, home to a burgeoning population of 600 000+. Lots of young faces on its chessboard-pattern streets make it a lively, modern city. Although there is little to see or do for the casual tourist, Shymkent is useful as a place to stock up on necessities, meet locals and have a decent meal, or as a stop-over on the way to nearby Tashkent, Turkestan or the nature reserves in the Tien Shan, all within a 2 hour radius.
