There are not a whole lot of dedicated bicycle shops in Central Asia. Outside of the main cities, where you can find some cycle fanatics who will be happy to help you out, there’s no one. This is horse and camel country. If you are looking for a knowledgeable bike repair service, options are thin on the ground.
So if you are planning a big trip, do carry some extra weight in the shape of bike tools and spares. You need to know how to repair your own bicycle here. Almost everyone cycling in Central Asia breaks something essential, and you can be sure it’s usually somewhere in a barren desert halfway to nowhere.
Bicycle shops in Kyrgyzstan
In Kyrgyzstan quality parts are only available in Bishkek, if available at all.
Bishkek bike shops
Nathan and Angie’s Athouse is the place to go to if you want to meet other cycle tourists, need a tool or need to order a part. Nathan is also pretty good at repairing bikes and has some parts in stock.
In Bishkek Gergert on Gorky street right near the Athouse is the biggest shop but the staff in the shop are not very knowledgeable, the staff in the repair/rental section next door are the ones to talk to. VeloLider is a smaller shop but it seems to carry more/better quality spare parts and the guy there speaks some English (closed on Mondays).
Karakol bike shop
In Karakol there is a stall with spare parts at the market. They carry surprisingly many parts and instruments. The ladies who work there seem to know a lot about bicycles and know a guy who apparently knows how to repair bikes. There is no bike rental place in Karakol anymore, besides Karakol cafe, which rents out two bikes. The CBT office is useless.
In Naryn there is also a stall at the bazaar with bike parts and the guys there might be able to help with some repairs.
Osh bike repair
In Osh there is no bike shop save for a few stalls at the bazaar with mostly cheap Chinese spare parts. We previously recommended the legendary “Master Tolik”, but he now lives in Bishkek since he became a priest. The new bike repair master in Osh, Hajiakbar, 0555 891 877, is very friendly and honest, no English but decent Russian, and he seems to know what he is doing. His stall is next to all the bike repair stalls. He also has a friend who imports spare parts from China and can give directions to his house, in case the necessary part is not available at the market.
Bicycle shops in Uzbekistan
Bike shops in Tashkent
Simple bike repair can be found all over town, for instance near Chorsu Bazaar. They might not be what you need, though.
There is a bike shop called Dinamo in Tashkent, which is supposedly absolutely useless. Best bike repair man in town is Dmitry, who knows his business well. Call him at +998909565170 (not too much English is spoken) and visit him in his workshop, now near Kadisheva bazaar. The location is across from Kadisheva bazaar’s main entrance behind a bus stop and is on Aviasozlar ko’chasi. It is not easy to find and no one in the area seems to know where it is. I would recommend calling ahead to let them know you are coming.
His partner in crime is Valera: +998 903 745 866. They also have a man in Gazalkent, northeast from Tashkent: call Umid at +998 971 581 982.
Apparently, there is also a man called Philip, who knows a guy called Andre, who in turn is known as ‘The Master’. He can fix you up. You can try at +99890 989 08 50, +99893 510 13 88 or +99897 119 89 12. Adress: somewhere on Amir Temur avenue, near subway station Habib Abdullaev.
Bike repair in Samarkand
Partnering with Dmitry and the gang in Tashkent, Samarkand has 2 bike repair men: Dmitry +998 662 275 883- and Vladimir, +99891 5554134.
Bike repair in Bukhara
Yusuf, +998934797515 – Horazm Street, 5, comes recommended. You can also try his friend Shahruz, whatsapp +998936542316 (thanks to Dimitri from Nexus Expedition for the tip!).
Bicycle shops in Kazakhstan
Bike shops in Almaty
There are a lot of bike shops in Almaty. It’s probably the best place in Central Asia to get some work done on your bike or to get bicycle parts that are unavailable elsewhere. Really, there are tons, including one by champion cyclist Alexander Vinokourov. We recommend the Ekstremal chain, which has very helpful staff who are knowledgeable and don’t do half work. They will even do small repairs for free, and they rent out bicycles, skis and snowboards as well. They have 4 shops around town:
- Prospekt Abay 40, between Baitursynov and Masanchi,
- Timiryazeva 64, on the corner of Rodostovtsa,
- Prospekt Dostyk 99, on the corner of Khadzhi-Mukan,
- Prospekt Ablai Khan 27, on the corner of Rayimbek.

Bicycle shops in Xinjiang
Bike shop in Kashgar
There is a bicycle shop in Kashgar which deals in Giant bicycles that comes recommended by touring cyclists. It has a great number of bikes and more importantly spare parts. Top of the line rims are in stock, also the whole variety of Shimano parts from Deore to XTR.
37 Jiankang Road, Kashgar
Bicycle shops in Tajikistan
Bike shops in Dushanbe
Nita and Kieran say: A quality mechanic is Bakhrom Shodiev, who works out of his home in the west of the city. He has some spare parts, but as this is not his normal job, this is not a full mechanic shop. He used to work in a bike shop in Ankara, Turkey but is now an English teacher in Dushanbe. His contact details are: [email protected], +992 919163448. Please note: he will charge a fee similar to what you will pay at home, which reflects the quality so don’t expect a cheap fix.
Rachel adds: Rentabike Tajikistan (+992 93 300 77 75. +992 91 720 22 20, Loik Sherali street 3, cnr with Rudaki) would also be helpful for bike repairs, spare parts, bike rental etc, and can provide you with bike boxes for putting your bike on an airplane.
Vitaliy Shuptar from Avalon in Karaganda has this to say: there is a bicycle community in Dushanbe (Tajikistan), organized around Tourism Development Center. The guys also have a page on Facebook, which they usually use to organize cycling trips.
Eric tells us: The Sultoni Kabir bazaar on Karaboev Avenue has a whole section for bikes but they only sell chinese parts. VeloMoto shop on Abdulahab Kakharov street, northeast of the bazaar (if I remember well) is not very far from there. I showed my broken derailer and split sheath cable and the guy was annoyed and looked at my bike for a mere 3 seconds and just said NIET and left. Not very friendly or helpful. Under the counter they had only few original Shimano parts.
Bicycle shops in Turkmenistan
We haven’t been able to find any bicycle shop in Ashgabat or Turkmenistan. Any tips welcome!
