Re: From Almaty ---> Dushanbe ?

The Air Astana service between Dushanbe and Almaty is very good. I would not hesitate to take it. I stayed at the City Hostel. It's more expensive than the Green House, but I liked it. Basic, clean rooms. Great internet speeds there. None of the other hotels I stayed at in Dushanbe came close to it,...

Re: Korday border crossing reports (Almaty-Bishkek)

Did the crossing today. Took the bus from Sairan in Almaty. Not a pleasant experience. Despite having an aisle seat, a bossy woman told me to get to the window & due to language issues I could not argue. The seats aren't wide. And mine was right behind the rear door, so it was super squished with li...

Re: Taxi @ Almaty airport: Q&A

The taxi booth doesn't seem to be any good. To get to a hotel in the center, the booth quoted 8K tenge. This was at around 4:30pm. The hotel had warned me that I shouldn't pay more than 3K. After talking to a number of other drivers, I finally got hold of Yandex Go and paid 4500 tenge for the ride. ...

Re: Dushanbe Airport Dilemma

Yesterday, Oct. 27, around noon I witnessed an Asian passenger being harassed by the official next to the counter I was at. These are dual pods (two officers sitting next to each other). The other passenger was Thai and the officer dealing with him said he cannot board the flight because he did not ...

Dushanbe-Iskanderkul-Khujand

I'm planning to go to Khujand and stop by a few places like Iskanderkul along the way, leaving Dushanbe in around 25th October. If anyone else is interested in this trip, we can put together an itinerary.

Re: Dushanbe Airport Taxis

I would definitely have walked it if I wasn't landing at 1am! Even in a safe city I prefer avoiding the late night walks :) The Green House charges $10 for an airport pickup. If my flight landed at a reasonable hour I'd have no hesitation walking to the metered taxi stand outside. But I'm taking th...

Re: Gifts for people

In villages I give people flag patches (the type and size people used to stick on backpacks). Those are light, easy to pack and can be bought in bulk online. You could also give sports souvenirs from wherever you are from (the lesser known the team/club, the better). Or any sort of cheesy souvenirs...

The Fergana section here at Caravanistan is a good starting point for a general info.

Gifts for people

I know these days everything is available everywhere, but I'm wondering if people have insights into what small gifts people in Tajikistan would appreciate? To make it simple, I have 2 demographic targets in mind: (1) well-to-do acquaintances in Dushanbe that I will be meeting, (2) and random people...
