Re: Turkmenistan transit visa refusals
Just a quick note to say that although I received my transit visa today in Mashhad, a French guy was refused while i was there and a Japanese couple were seemingly also refused (told they didn't have (lost) their documentation but they could try reapply and wait another 10 days. So the lottery is se...

Re: Visa Extension in Gorgan, Iran
Thanks to the above couple, all the details were precisely correct.
I arrived at 8am and was dealt with very swiftly and efficiently (again helps that they don't speak English so questions are very limited) and I had my visa extension within the hour including the short trip to the bank.
Regards
Evan

Hi Yann Oh yeah by technical I meant everything to do with managing well/coping/surviving in extremely cold temperatures...i.e. vapour barrier and bivvy bags for the sleeping bag, pogies, and winter gloves, winter pac boots, snow tyres, bladder for water so it doesn't freeze, etc. etc. the list goes...

Re: Starting the silk road in September from France
Hi Yann I will be doing it on a very similar route in the same direction during this winter but slightly ahead of you (entering Iran in mid November) so give me a shout if you want to chat about things, i've done a fair bit of research already - mostly on the technical aspects of gear, etc. As steve...

Re: Safety in Eastern Turkey right now - crossing to Iran
We cycled right through the region (from Diyarbakir-Siirt-Tatvan-Van-Dogubayazit-Kars) and although a number of the bombings and shootings happened in the cities while we were in them there really was no feeling of a threat at all, as the conflict is exclusively between the kurdish PKK and the Turki...

Re: Turkey-Georgia border closed at Cildir/Aktas-Kartsakhi
I passed through Cildir on 9th August and can confirm that this border crossing is definitely NOT open and the locals don't hold out much hope that it will open anytime soon.
