Re: Current situation Iran

Personally I came to the conclusion that the ethical dimension is kinda important in this whole decision. Because, sure, the risk is low to an individual tourist. In this case maybe lower than a road accident, maybe not: in most other countries there are zero tourists being held hostage, and in Iran...

Re: Current situation Iran

Ah, and yes. it's very much safe Not really, though, unless you enjoy playing roulette with a rogue government. There are currently a dozen Westerners - including tourists - and a whole bunch more dual-nationals in Iranian prisons on sham charges, apparently being used as bargaining chips to extrac...

Re: Backpacking Iraq

Ccandelario, that's really interesting. One thing you did not mention: your physical appearance. It may be uncomfortable to hear it, but independent travel in places without tourists is SO much simpler when one can pass for a local. And conversely, much more complicated - and maybe dangerous - when ...

Re: Zahedan - Quetta border crossing (IR -> PAK)

What a story! Ha! You already mentioned some bits in other posts but that's a great little writeup, thanks. It's really clearer now what all this involves. So the desert crossing is only 2 full days, I was imagining more like 4. But still, more like 5 days of limited freedom, 85 changes of escort an...

Re: Crossing Iran - Pakistan border at Gabd-Reemdan

Yep I did also see that intriguing post. Just did some scouting around GMaps. You're right, there are a couple of bus and taxi offices at the border and in the reviews people are talking about buses to Gwadar and even mentioning Karachi. Wow this could be promising - maybe the security situation rea...

Re: Wagah Border (Lahore - Amritsar) PAK - IND

Haha classic stuff, there's rules and then there's the reality, right? Very useful info, thanks. Obvious follow-up question - how did you arrange the Pakistan visa? Because if I understand this right, a Pakistan transit visa is quite simple in Tehran BUT (a) it takes a few days waiting and (b) a tra...

Re: Zahedan - Quetta border crossing (IR -> PAK)

Well that Belgian cyclist really got lucky bumping into you! With your car you at least had some (tiny) degree of privacy and comfort. I'm just trying to imagine what this involves exactly for a backpacker. I have been in many adventurous situations but this challenge just sounds like next-level unp...

Re: Zahedan - Quetta border crossing (IR -> PAK)

Yes indeed, and not just time but also extreme discomfort, no? Six days to travel 600km in the back of a jeep, with dozens and dozens of transfers and waiting, and sleeping on the floors of police stations - is that all correct? Maybe it was more comfortable for you with a car. Anyway, your attitude...
