So to answer this myself, it was a swift problem-free border crossing. Hardly anyone else crossing though so we had to take a taxi to Dogubayuzit.
There was some parading in the streets in anticipation of the election results.

Bazargan to Gurbulak (Iran/Turkey) border crossing Q&A
We have to leave Iran tomorrow (1st Nov) as our Visa is about to expire. We plan to exit from Bazargan.
Does anyone have any news about security / problems? We heard that there is an election being held that day - is that any reason for concern?

Re: Fast Internet in Iran
Thanks for asking around. If I understand correctly, Caffenet (or CoffeeNet) is a generic term for an internet cafe. I have tried a few but they just aren't reliable enough for what I needed. I appreciate your help. One owner told me that some of the delay is the filter/firewall that the Govt uses t...

I've tried a couple of the major hotels and a a few coffeenet places, but have had to cancel the call and reschedule. I can go anywhere in Iran - I expect that Tehran is by best chance. Does any...

Re: Turkmenistan Transit Itinerary
Bukhara - Mary in 1 day is definitely possible, but it's a quite a long day, depending on how long it takes at teh border. I suggest to visit Merv 1 day, but then move on to Ashgabat, a truly interesting city. For travel times and prices, see http://caravanistan.com/transport/bus-shared-taxi/turkme...

We intended to leave early from Bukhara, find a way to Mary and stay for (say) two nights there then head towards the Border at Saraghs and...

Re: Uzbekistan Embassy in Almaty report
Uzbek Visa in Almaty. We (Australians) got an LOI from the Caravanistan form - Uzbek Travel. 7 day turn around as promised - delivered with prepared application forms. Highly recommended. Arrived at embassy at 2pm, normal wait like everyone else, they took our applications at 3pm, payment slip to ba...
