On the page for Chinese visa you now say "Possible with the help of Serik. Perhaps also by yourself?" I would say it should be technically possible to get the visa by yourself, but practically not. The visa application had at least four pages, perhaps more and filling it is far from easy. ...

On the first entry (west of Uralsk, coming from Saratov) they took my passport, filled in the migration card and told me to go to the other booth, where a passport control took place. RK (Cyrillic: PK) was marked as inviting party. The border guard put two stamps on the card and one on the passport ...

Yes, I am writing this in Serik's office with the passport with the Chinese visa 3 centimetres left from my left hand. Just got it a short while ago :)
Serik is a magnificent person and he was able to help me get the visa indeed. Now off to CHINA!

Borders China-Burma and Burma-India?

I'm planning to enter Burma from China in about one month from now, in the beginning of October, spend a few weeks in Burma and continue to India.
My means of travel is hitchhiking.

Do I need some special permits and where can I apply for them?

My visa application (I'm a Finnish citizen) was just accepted by the Chinese consulate in Almaty earlier today. The visa should be ready by next Wednesday.
I was told of a month-long problem at the embassy, which has now been solved.

I'm a Finnish citizen, visa free regime has been in effect since Aug 15th. Entered Kazakstan from the direction of Saratov, near Uralsk/Oral. Tried to register at the migration police in Shymkent, was told that no registration is needed with the visa waiver program, they refused to do anything. Left...
