Re: Buying a Carpet in Central Asia

Seradane -- I was glad to hear in the related thread that your carpet arrived safe and sound. This is great information, and thanks for posting. On a semi-related note, have you been tempted to buy another one? I'm very curious what you've seen over the past few months regarding carpets for sale, th...

Re: Kugitang Nature Reserve -- Any Thoughts?

That's interesting to hear. I contacted a travel agency in the country, who replied that travel permits for nature reserves have been unavailable for the last 3-4 years. Apparently there's more to the story here. Things will change there; I admit, looking from a distance now, it doesn't look good. O...

Re: Buying a Carpet in Central Asia

Just to add on about two things: 1. Seradane, keep us posted. We'll be curious to see what solution you came up with for shipping your carpet, and what else you see as you head south. 2. Steven makes a good point about bazaar carpets. This would be a good topic for others to post on any similar coll...

Re: The Pamir Highway: Overrated or Underrated?

So this is a somewhat of a tangent, but can someone shed some light on the subject of Central Asia and seatbelts? Years ago, while in Beijing, a taxi driver told me that in the west, people drive fast but not crazy. According to him, the difference in China was that people drive crazy, but slow. I r...

Re: Buying a Carpet in Central Asia

First off, congratulations on your new carpet (i.e., shyrdak). Having been shown a few rugs in my travels, mainly just for the experience of it with no real compunction to buy, my counter to the seller has often been something to the effect of "It's very nice, but not for me. I see a carpet as a new...

Re: Kugitang Nature Reserve -- Any Thoughts?

I'll let you know if we make it, and thanks. Through some other channels, I've heard chatter that permits are not being issued for Turkmenistan nature reserves, and haven't for the last several years. I'm wondering if anyone can verify that. I'm also hoping someone can weigh in on Lebap Province. I ...

Buying a Carpet in Central Asia

Now being a "real" traveler, I would only set looking for memories, photos, and friends. I go light -- in what I carry and my footprint, and try to live in sync with the people in the places I go. "Stuff" just isn't that important, plus I want to be careful not to spend the kind of money that really...

Re: Kugitang Nature Reserve -- Any Thoughts?

Hi Steven -- Thanks, and you raise some good points. A good friend of ours just took a job in Astana, which seems as good a reason as any for a return trip to Central Asia. Of course he'd still have to work for some of the time we'd be visiting, so I've been starting to think about side trips. Admit...

Re: The Pamir Highway: Overrated or Underrated?

As the OP, I thought I'd circle back and let people know my wife and I chose to go instead to Ladakh. This was a little of a tough call. While we had already made several previous trips to India, ultimately we looked at the car time in Tajikistan and decided to do something more active, going trekki...

Kugitang Nature Reserve -- Any Thoughts?

Many years ago I made a trip to Turkmenistan, coming in from Bukhara over the Farap-Alap crossing. There I was met by a driver, taken to Ashgabat, where I met my guide and saw sights mainly in the Ahal and Dashoguz Provinces. Now I'm thinking of going back. I have friends who recently moved to Astan...
