Re: Exemptions from Russian Visa Permit Requirement

I haven't looked at the UB post here but I do remember that people had the same issue there. In any case, it's going to be the same list so if your country is not on it in Bishkek it's not going to be on it in UB either. I coudl be wrong, but I don't think Russian visa on the road is an option for y...

Re: Hiring a car in Almaty, looking for others and police checks

Police checks are very common. You don't have to pay if you didn't do anything wrong. But it's difficult to never do anything wrong. As soon as you see a sign announcing a village: brake! The speed camera is posted right at the sign so if you are going 2 km over the limit as you roll into the villag...

I would make sure you get everything you need except for bread in Osh - Sary Tash has some small shops. You can get somoni in Osh.

I am on a really tight schedule and wonder what is the minimum time needed to see the sights of Samarqand? Can all the main sights be covered in one day?
Yes, they are all close to each other. A day will do.

Re: Stan countries hospital quality

If it's just a blood test it should be fine. Each country has at least one decent private hospital, Kazakhstan has the best ones I think. For anything serious people fly to Dubai or Istanbul or India.

Re: Baku hotels with early check-in flexibility

Yes, both Baku and Aqtau are more business travel than tourist destinations so they are used to getting your business anyway. Pay another night or perhaps "day use", which is becoming more popular with several sites offering this service, or otherwise drop your bags and explore the city until you ca...

Re: Tashkent: Gulnara guesthouse closed?

Sounds closed. I don't have details. It was a nice place back in the day when options were very limited for budget travelers. These days you do have a bunch of options (although it pays to book in advance in high season).

Re: I can’t take out a second mortgage…

We don't work with any rental companies in Uzbekistan anymore cos we couldn't honestly recommend anyone decent...I agree it is a problem to find someone reliable. But you certainly don't need a 4x4 for Uzbekistan, it's mostly flat and the roads are decent. So if it's just you, get the cheapest car y...
