Re: Special Permits in Russian Altai

Yeah i find a lot of questions and few answers. Does anyone know what I can expect to happen if I turn up without a permit where one is needed? Will there be road checkpoints that I cant get past, or will the first I know about being in a permit zone be when I get arrested? Considering just giving i...

Special Permits in Russian Altai

Does anyone know whether special permits are needed to travel along the charish river (by road), курья > харлово > Чарышское > коргон > усть-кан > туекта?

Thanks!

Re: Russian Transit Visa by bicycle

I got a double no. No to transit visas by bicycle, and no to any visa in Almaty for UK citizens who don't live in Kazakhstan. He seemed to be merrily dishing out all sorts of visas to Schengen-citizens (without residency in Kazakhstan), but perhaps it's better if someone else confirms that.

Re: Russian Transit Visa by bicycle

Tried to get the transit visa this morning in Almaty. The guy refused to give me one on the basis of "UK/European citizens can't get visas outside their home country" (Im a UK citizen, he used the terms UK/European interchangeably). Which was, of course, the entire reason I wanted a transi...

Re: Embassy report: Chinese visa in Almaty

I went and asked the other day at the Chinese consulate in Almaty. They were very friendly and helpful but also 100% firm that they don't have tourist visas, and only give visas to Kazakhs visiting relatives and similiar.

Re: Russian Transit Visa by bicycle

Thanks crazydre, good info! From the furthest east border crossing in Kazakhstan (near Semey) to the furthest West in Mongolia is a little over 1000km, unless Im missing something? Which is why Im gonna need 10 days. Why not a tourist visa? Im applying in Bishkek or Almaty, getting a tourist visa is...

Russian Transit Visa by bicycle

Has anyone used a russian transit visa with a bicycle? Im thinking of using one to get from Kazakhstan to Mongolia. Id need the full 10 days though.

If a bicycle is impossible, can you apply for (say) a train-based transit visa and then turn up at the border on a bicycle?

Cheers!

Re: Embassy report: Chinese visa in Almaty

So as I understand it it's impossible to get a visa for overland travel in either Bishkek or Almaty? Is Astana possible? Is there any way to get a visa in Bishkek or Almaty (without actually flying to China)?
