Re: Hotel suggestions in Muynak

It's a couple of years ago now, but our hotel in Nukus (The Jipek Joli, I think) arranged a driver to take us to the Aral Sea & Muynaq, and arranged a homestay for us in Muynaq which was cool. I would recommend that over staying in a hotel there.

Re: Report: Train from Tashkent to Nukus

I did the same journey, Tashkent to Nukus, last month, but sadly no restaurant car on my train. Had to make do with Bread and all the beer I could carry on board. As an aside, one of things I spotted somewhere about an hour or two outside Nukus was what looked like a I giant head of Lenin carved ont...

Trip Report - 3 weeks in Central Asia

So, after a couple of weeks back home the dust has settled, so I thought I'd write a quick dit about my trip, hopefully someone picks something useful out of it for their own jaunt across the region. Three friends and myself flew from the UK to Almaty (via Kyiv) for three weeks. Our itinerary was ro...

Re: Uzbekistan closed 20 Aug - 5 Sep

As far as I can tell, they're "officially" looking for porn, but in practice they seemed to spend 10 minutes quizzing us about the places we'd been to and that's it. Bored curiosity was the order of the day.

Re: Bishkek to Shymkent by train?

Pls. consider that when buying train tickets from http://www.rzd.ru for trains which do not offer "electronic registration", you have to exhcange your booking confirmation to a "real" paper train ticket before the trip. This is only possible at ticket offices or ticket machines at train stations in...

Tashkent to Shymkent Crosing (Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan) by Train

The last border crossing of our trip last week, the easiest in terms of searches and questioning, by far the worst in terms of experience. We were on the 2-night sleeper train from Nukus to Almaty. From arriving at the Uzbek border stop to leaving the Kazakh border stop took about 4 hours in total, ...

Buston-Oybek Crossing (Tajikistan into Uzbekistan)

Crossed at this border a couple of weeks ago, no problems at all. After a nice taxi ride from Khujand, we pitched up, no issues getting through the Tajiki side, stamped out pretty quickly and only really had a cursory glance through our bags. Onto the Uzbek side, passports stamped after the usual th...

Changing Uzbek Som in Almaty

Despite my best efforts, i've exited Uzbekistan with about $40 worth of Som. Is there anywhere anyone knows of in Almaty to change it to Tenge or USD, or will I be able to change it back in the UK?

Beshariq border crossing (Uzbekistan to Tajikistan, Fergana Valley)

Went through this crossing a couple of days ago, was much smoother than anticipated, although time consuming. Taxi from Fergana to the crossing took about an hour, after being arranged for us by Valentina (of Valentina's Guest House fame, highly recommended). Once we arrived at the border, the place...
