Re: Bishkek to Istanbul overland - visas, budget and cash withdrawl
Hi Miri We picked up our Iran visa in Bishkek, it was pretty hassle free. We put the application in on Wednesday and picked up on Friday. We arranged the authorisation number through keys2persia.com. I would recommend starting the visa process around a month before you intend to arrive in Iran. You ...

Re: Help required on a proposed trip from Almaty via Train & Plane and back to Almaty.
Hi Traveller11
When we were in Kazakhstan, we booked train tickets online using www.tickets.kz. We didn't book any international train tickets but I think they do have some routes. Our experience with the online booking system was very positive.

Re: Pamirs altitude sickness: Osh to Murghab
We stopped near Sary Moghul (yurt camp at Turparkul) for a night between Osh and Murghab, which I would recommend. It was a lovely isolated spot, just a couple of yurts. We didn't really get any altitude sickness issues, but everyone's different.

Re: Uzbekistan Embassy in Almaty report
We got our visa with Australian passports no worries. The Embassy only accepts visa applications on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between 3pm and 5pm. That said, we were able to apply at 2pm so opening hours appear to be somewhat flexible. You need to provide: - copy of your Letter of In...

Re: Tajikistan launches evisa with GBAO permit
Don't think you need specific dates for GBAO - I entered the GBAO the day after my specified 'entry date' and no questions were asked. Our driver paid plenty of bribes along the way though - usually small amounts.

Re: Embassy report - Mongolian visa in Hanoi
Im not sure to be honest, the lady we spoke to didn't specify what she meant by 'itinerary' but I'm pretty sure if you just typed out an itinerary with a few locations and dates, plus how you plan to enter and leave, you would be fine without having anything booked. It would be best to speak to the ...

Ah yes I see, thanks. The map I had looked at made the affected area seem further east. Thanks for replying.

Re: Tajikistan launches evisa with GBAO permit
We had the same experience as Karoutcho - we were given 90 days to enter from the date we selected during the application process (23 August). Duration of stay 45 days. Application approved within 24 hours.

Security situation in Kunduz
Hi all We are currently organising our Pamir Hwy trip through the Wakhan Valley (departing on 23 Aug). I just read on BBC that the Taliban have recaptured the Kunduz district which borders with Tajikistan along the valley. Any ideas on whether this is likely to cause security issues during a trip th...

Train from Shymkent to Bishkek
We are in Kazakhstan at the moment (Astana) and were thinking of travelling from Shymkent to Bishkek by train. What is the best way to book tickets? The other option is to catch the overnight bus from Shymkent. Is there any way we can buy these tickets in advance? We've already we been caught out in...
