In rural areas, while trekking, ... noone will ask to see your passport. On the other hand, there is no reason why you wouldn't carry your passport.
I'm Belgian, and in Belgium it is the law you must always have your ID card ... but many don't comply.

Istaravshan has a huge market, that's the attraction. Personally I prefer nature attractions such as Iskanderkul to any town in Tajikistan. I rather recommend a homestay in Sarytag (but I also stayed in a homestay in the Khujsnd maze of old lanes).

June I don't know, but yes I hiked it solo. From the North there was a friendly yurt camp at the base and the way is easy and obvious. Coming from the South, it is off trail and the way and it is not at all obvious, lots of scree. I combined it with the abandoned hot springs of Eli Sui near Aktal, a...

The Batken area was out of bounds and the border crossing there was closed. I don't think it has changed.

The last part of the track to Altyn Arashan is very rough. Even the truck and the jeeps were in difficulty after a heavy rain.

If you have a problem, you will be on your own too.
Most tourists prefer a 4WD with driver.

For hiking, or possibly cycling in remote areas, I recommend you to download the old Soviet topographical maps which are available on different websites, i use maps.vlasenko.net (free of charge).
