Re: Airplane boneyard near Osh airport

Having worked for a year on Almaty airport, I'd advise caution going into parked aircraft areas. The locals have a habit of retaining some godawful wrecks as a source of spares and even refurbishing them back to "flightworthy" if they can sell them. Someone owns these aircraft and may consider touri...

Re: 4 cyclists killed in Tajikistan

It's misrepresentation to suggest that terrorist attacks in London, Paris, Brussels, etc, mean those cities are no safer than touring in TJ, as Pamirski says, in a city of 8 million like London the odds of getting caught in such an attack are vanishingly small. But when there are maybe a few hundred...

Re: Big Almaty Lake: experiences

I booked a tour to the lake - our guide Dima turned up on time in a 4x4 and took care of all the formalities. The weather on the day wasn't good (rain) so we cut short the hike and instead he took us up to the observatories above the lake. The guard at the barrier to the access road carefully noted ...

Re: Buying Car in Kazakhstan - Driving it to Europe

2. should be fine as long as you don't want to sell it in Europe, then things might get expensive with import taxes. For info, in the UK there are no import taxes to pay as long as you meet the HMRC requirements for change of residence: https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/paying-vat-a...

Re: Big Silk Road trips: Weather planning Q&A

If you have the visa for Turkmenistan it might be worth looking into a trip to the Door to Hell. The visa can be hard to get but it'd probably be a more memorable visit than Ashgabat. Steven - you say Song Kul will be empty by September. Is this because it's mostly a 'seaside' destination that only ...

Re: Motorcycle Maintenance/Tire Changes on the Road

"Agent Orange" in Almaty are the KTM dealers for the country: http://www.motoshop.kz There are also dealers in Aktau and Shymkent, but the Almaty one is probably more useful, it's a good size and they speak English. But if you want tyres you might be advised to let them know in advance. The BMW deal...

Re: Early arrival at Astana airport

When arriving at any airport in Kazakhstan it's good practice to ignore all the unofficial taxi pests who hang around the arrival doors touting for business. A firm "nyet" should be enough. The unofficial cabs may overcharge you or try to rob you. The genuine liveried ones should be OK and there is ...

Re: Starting to plan the Silk Road trip

These are all hot countries. Consider starting earlier. The weather in Iran should be nice in March/April, which would mean you were doing the more northerly Stans during the hotter months, and you wouldn't be running past October when things start to get very cold. However, even they will have temp...

Bear spray

AKA pepper spray or self defence spray. For a motorcycling tour through the Stans and into Russia and Ukraine I was considering buying a small can of this, for defence against wild animals when camping out and also for personal security. However I don't want to get in trouble with the police. Wikipe...

Re: from baku to astana with two checked bags, which airline to choose

Air Astana gives you 23kgs baggage allowance per person. That's quite a lot, are you sure you need more than that?

To be honest in that region I wouldn't fly with anyone else. There's a reason why they were the only airline from the region approved to fly into European airspace.
