Trip report - one month in Kyr, Uzb, Kaz

Hi all, First I wanted to say thanks for the answers to the hundred and one questions I asked on this forum before my trip. I had a fantastic time and thought I'd share some of what I did, with photos, as well as advice to others who are considering a similar itinerary. https://notesontravel.wordpre...

Essential and appreciated language phrases

Hi all, I'm about to finally depart for my month long trip to Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, and was wondering if people who know these countries well have any advice about language. I'm aware that I can easily find out essential phrases such as 'thank you' from guidebooks (a word which seem...

Detailed map of Son kol

Hi, Is there anywhere you can get a detailed map of Son Kol? I'm going to have 2 nights to spend in yurts coming from and back to Kyzart, and am trying to work out exactly where Jamanechki, Tuz-Ashu and Kilemche are and which route / places to stay each night are best. The info in the lonely planet ...

Charyn/Kolsai / Aksu-Zhabagly / more time in Almaty

Hi there, We'll be travelling from Tashkent to Almaty by train, and will then have five full days in Kazakhstan (as well as most of the day we arrive). I'm torn between lazing away 3 days or so in Almaty plus an overnight to Charyn Canyon/Kolsai Lakes plus a day trip to Big Almaty lake, OR getting o...

Bishkek to Osh flights

I want to take one of the super cheap Bishkek to Osh flights, but don't know whether to book a super late one or a super early one the next day. These flights are so cheap at the moment but I'm wondering if anyone knows how long they stay cheap for? Would I be better booking in advance or do they pr...

How to choose a yurt camp to stay on the northern shore of Song kul?

Hi, I plan to walk to Song kul from Kyzart, and then get a lift out to Kochkor 1. What's the best way to choose a yurt camp to stay at? 2. Would it be better to leave some of my possessions in Kyzart and walk back to Kyzart after visiting the lake, rather than hoping to find a lift back from Song ku...

Re: Uzbekistan trains / photography

Thanks all for your replies. I've also found a hostel in Tashkent - Art Hostel - that will book train tickets on behalf of guests. Seems to be much better priced than the agencies.

Re: Uzbekistan trains / photography

Super, thanks! Out of interest, how did you pay for the tickets? Credit/debit card?

I've also found http://globalconnect.uz/ which is an agent but seems to charge very reasonable rates.
