I plan on taking this border crossing in April. It will be on a Sunday, so there should be a 14:00 train to Bereket. When I arrive early and have walked around a bit in Gyzyletrek, I might try to hitchhike or take shared transportation to Serdar as well.

Has anyone been here in recent times?

Yes, my contacts in Bamiyan and Kabul told me the same. It's a shame, but not worth taking the risk, I guess..

My visa application is in process right now. On the website it is listed that normally it takes 10 working days (35€) and ifyou choose express (55€) it takes three days. The otherwise quite helpful guy at the Berlin embassy told me that normally it takes 20 working days and express is 10 working day...

My invitation didn't have to be anything official, as long as I provided a passport copy of the Afghan person inviting me. This was in Berlin.

They only asked for the visa fee after having approved my documents.
