Re: Offroad track to mountains - our map/suggestions?

Having driven the South side I can confirm that the landscape isn't particularly remarkable. Something I didn't anticipate was the fact that the road was very rarely besides the lake. There is only a short section where it drops down to the lake's edge (30-40mins max). The rest of the time you're at...

Re: Cross-border market in Khorogh

Seysearles, It's really funny you write about swimming across the river to Afghanistan so seriously because when I was there, my friend and I would constantly joke about doing just that. On the other hand, there were some moments where I considered it due to how hot it gets down there! I seriously ...

Re: Plane tickets to Ashgabat

Been looking for airline tickets to Ashgabat this summer and they are really expensive. Does anybody know why? Been looking to go to Turkmenistan from Azerbaijan, and the only direct flight is with Lufthansa it seems. But its crazy expensive. Ist cheaper if you fly up to Moscow, but thats a far str...

= USD 0.16/ltr (using black market rate). You can fill a 60ltr car with premium fuel for USD10. It costs me USD80+. Crazy!

Re: Cross-border market in Khorogh

You don't cross to Afghanistan, or it's not on "no mans land", it's fenced in area on Tajikistan side. I think for the sake of clarity ... you can not "tick off" Afghanistan by visiting one of these markets. If you're desperate to cross into Afghanistan and are willing to take s...

Re: Flight Dushanbe Tashkent

Very pricey though ($250 from memory). We found that the cheapest option was taxi to Khujand ($25) then fly to Dushanbe on Somon Airlines ($35/each). Alternatively you can share taxi all the way there in around 6-7hrs for $40 and the drive is really beautiful. It involves private taxi to Oibek borde...

Re: Imigration card scam...

We entered at Kyzylart and b/c of this info, insisted on that card. They said they no longer exist, they don't have any and when I suggested they confirm in writing, we got a stamped peace of paper saying they have no immigration cards ... all friendly. Confirmed with several people, including tour...

Somon Airlines

Just heads up based on our experiences regarding Somon Airlines. Contact the airline 24hrs prior to departure to confirm that the flight is in fact departing. We arrived at Khujand airport ready to board our flight to Dushanbe to find it completely dead and be told by a lonely information counter cl...

Re: Pamir road and the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan

Hi everyone, First post here, as I am planning to go on the Pamir road from September 7 (flight from Dushanbe to Khorog) to September 15 (Osh). Besides inquiring whether this time frame is realistic, I am a little concerned about the rather alarmous security updates I have read here and there, rega...

Re: Shavat-Dashoguz border crossing report

The taxi drivers on the Uzbek side surprised me though, they wouldn't take us to Khiva for anything less than 30$, which was a total rip-off. We paid USD20 for Shavat --> Urgench (to buy train ticket) --> Khiva. The driver helped to organise the train ticket also (although he did give us a sort of ...
