Re: Men wearing shorts in Uzbekistan

One trip from Tashkent to Osh and then back in from Shymkent, the other trip from Panjakent to Beyneu, so basically most of the parts of the country that people are likely to visit.

I also know other cyclists who have ridden through in lycra so I'm not the only one.

Re: Embassy report: Chinese visa in Hong Kong

I (British) got a 60 day tourist visa in Hong Kong in November 2018. I had an LoI from friends within China, and at the start I'd booked a flight out and planned an itinerary but hadn't booked most of the itinerary yet. The clerk at the visa office insisted they only gave 30 day visas in HK and was ...

Re: Dangerous road drivers in kyrgyzstan and kazakhstan?

They're better than India but worse than Europe/America. Riding in the city is a bit of an experience at first but you soon get used to the local norms and expectations. Rigid in the country is no problem as everywhere is so sparsely populated. Precautions: be aware of your surroundings and keep you...

This hunting shop had pierce-type cartridges in April 2019. No screw cartridges though.

Re: Men wearing shorts in Uzbekistan

I've now made two trips to Uzbekistan, both times cycling, and wore Lycra bike shorts in the day / 3/4 cargos in the evenings. No problem at all. I didn't hear any sniggeres, nobody looked offended and I never got service refused or anything like that.

Re: Tajen Border crossing uzbekistan kazakstan

I (British national) crossed this going westwards with a bicycle in early April 2019. There is a truck stop on the Uzbek side that has a canteen, and basic rooms available for 90,000 Som. Everyone gets up before 6am to be first in the queue for the border. When I rolled up at half nine, the guards s...

Re: Penjikent Border Crossing Reports

I (British national) crossed TJ to UZ with a bicycle mid-March 2019. It couldn't have been easier: "What is your country, birthday, purpose of visit, profession, STAMP" and I was through.

Butane/Propane gas canisters in Dushanbe

I stayed at City Hostel Dushanbe three weeks ago (mid March 2019) and they sold resealable gas canisters - both the MSR-type screw fit and the Campingaz-type clamp fit. I was the first cyclist through the this year and I think the guy said I was buying the last screw fit canister they had from last ...

Howto: fly with a bike from Aktau to Baku

I've just flown across the Caspian from Aktau to Baku. As the ferry is so irregular, flying is a much better option despite the drag of having to pack/unpack your bike. Useful points for the record: Bike boxes: you can get these at Sportmaster in Aktau. There's a bike workshop on the second floor th...

Re: Embassy report: Uzbekistan visa in London

At the start of this month I applied for a 3 entry Uzbek visa by post from the UK. I filled in the form, provided photocopies of all the internal pages of my passport (not the cover) and sent the form, passport, photos and a return SD envelope by special delivery to the embassy in London. I emailed ...
