I had a hostel owner that bought UZS back from me in USD. The commission was around 10%, but at the time I was worried I wouldn't be able to get rid of it. Everything went fine on exit. I took the Almaty - Tashkent train after staying in Kazakhstan for about 6 days.
As a data point someone in the military came around and asked if everything was ok with my interaction with the border guard. It almost felt like he wanted customer feedback .

I went to the OVIR in Almaty today. They refused to register me. I only have one stamp on my migration card, which I guess is normal if you enter overland? (fingers crossed) I'll update the thread here when I leave. On a side note I also emailed the Kazakh Embassy in the US. They said US Citizens on...

Train Novosibirsk to Almaty
I'm wondering a few things about this train's crossing into Kazakhstan. Do you know which crossing it uses? Is the crossing international? Anyone have experience with how long it takes and the timing?
