Re: Ishkashim border crossing: open or closed?

I should have posted this over a month ago. There were two Australians that bribed or somehow lost $2000 to the border police exiting here. From what I heard they might have been quite naïve as they thought they were the first tourists in Afghanistan for two years... Either way, if anyone is passing...

Re: Uzbekistan train - no problem using rzd.ru

For anyone in the situation I had - not able to get to an Uzbek station, one of two final beds available and needing a ticket to travel the next night - I'd recommend it.

If there's a better option for that, please correct me.

Uzbekistan train booking with rzd.ru

I booked my Tashkent-Urgench ticket through rzd.ru and even though it's not an e-ticket I had no problem entering the station with it or boarding the train. Staff assumed it was a regular ticket, when I pointed out the overlaying text stating that it cannot be used for travel a staff member took me ...

Embassy report: Pakistan visa in Tashkent

Unfortunately, there was absolutely no way I could apply here without Uzbek residency for either the tourist or transit visa. Pakistan embassy in Tehran seems to be the closest allowing non-residents to apply for the visa. Check here for more info: http://caravanistan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3...

Re: URGENT - travel insurance for IRAN

There is this one, which I haven't used by certainly meets the travelling criteria - double check for Iranian coverage. http://www.imgeurope.co.uk/msm/moneysupermarket2.aspx Also, (at least) one of these comparison sites lists in the results whether it's ok if you've already started travelling. If y...

Re: Ishkashim border crossing: open or closed?

From what I heard in Kabul about the area from expats and locals, it certainly doesn't sound like it's a safe time to go. Visiting Eshkashem itself shouldn't be a problem but venturing further I wouldn't On the whole, the situation in Afghanistan is worsening day by day. Again, this is all from what...

Re: Afghanistan (from Iran, to Uzbekistan)

Also, one more tip. For the Kabul<=>Bamyan flights. If it's fully booked (which often is at least six days in advance), book the next available and turn up on the morning of the flight you want. Chances are you'll get on and there will still be another three to six seats empty. Worked no problem Bam...

Afghanistan trip report: Herat, Kabul, Bamiyan, Mazar

I do not recommend this to travellers that are not aware of the situation and security risk. Just being a foreigner is enough to get you killed or kidnapped. The security situation can change on a daily basis. Visa in Tehran report: http://caravanistan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2304&p=13157#p131...
