I should have posted this over a month ago. There were two Australians that bribed or somehow lost $2000 to the border police exiting here. From what I heard they might have been quite naïve as they thought they were the first tourists in Afghanistan for two years... Either way, if anyone is passing...

For anyone in the situation I had - not able to get to an Uzbek station, one of two final beds available and needing a ticket to travel the next night - I'd recommend it.

If there's a better option for that, please correct me.

Unfortunately, there was absolutely no way I could apply here without Uzbek residency for either the tourist or transit visa. Also, one more tip. For the Kabul<=>Bamyan flights. If it's fully booked (which often is at least six days in advance), book the next available and turn up on the morning of the flight you want. Chances are you'll get on and there will still be another three to six seats empty. Worked no problem Bam...

I do not recommend this to travellers that are not aware of the situation and security risk. Just being a foreigner is enough to get you killed or kidnapped.
