Re: Visiting Georgia after Abkhazia

The border point KPP Ingur is currently closed. If it should reopen, the route is doable for you, but you might run into trouble when re-entering Georgia. Some sources suggest that CIS nationals aren't allowed to cross at Ingur at all (by the Georgians). Although Ukraine has recently left the CIS, I...

Re: Need advice for trains between Moscow, Almaty, and Urumqi

Dec 14/15 is the weekend of the big yearly international timetable change, meaning that I (and neither anyone else) won't be able to tell you what train connection you should take before approx. mid-October (when the new schedule is released) for a journey after this date. The language you use pass....

Re: Need advice for trains between Moscow, Almaty, and Urumqi

I always use pass.rzd.ru, the official website of Russian Railways. The direct train Moscow-Almaty has indeed been cancelled a few years ago, change in Nur-Sultan or Petropavlovsk. Re: Off the beaten path eateries

Many of the eateries you find at bazaars and similar places will not sell alcohol, but nevertheless, it is not hard to find a place selling beer as well. Good restaurants (which are still not expensive) usually have alcohol.

Re: Wheelchair access in Uzbekistan

I haven't seen or heard of barrier-free facilities on any Uzbek train. Uzbek Railways' website also says nothing about wheelchair access (I checked the Russian version as I do not speak Uzbek, but doubt that the Uzbek language version is any different).

Re: Wheelchair access in Uzbekistan

Well, I doubt that any place in Khiva has such a thing as a real barrier-free toilet, so it will depend on the skills of the wheelchair user to use "normal" facilities. When taking the train, AFAIK there is no barrier-free access. I assume everyone will try to make things possible, so if t...

This link confirms that such a ferry exists, but they neither accept cars nor tourists.
