Re: Van trip France-Kyrgyzstan & come back by train ?

There is no such thing as car-carrying passenger trains anywhere in or from/to Central Asia, these are mainly an European thing (and are becoming rare here as well). It may be possible to ship the car as cargo, but this is going to be really expensive and if the car is old, the cost of this may exce...

Re: Travel Russia-Abkhazia-Georgia

It is totally possible, I know someone who did this. But keep in mind that problems when re-entering Georgia are possible even years later.

Re: Travel Russia-Abkhazia-Georgia

Totally impossible, if you try, it may well get you arrested, fined and deported to your home/passport-issuing country.

The other direction is generally possible, although problems when re-entering Georgia later cannot be ruled out.

Re: Uzbekistan summer 2021

Concerning the border crossing, although I have not been there since the pandemic: A very common way to cross Central Asian borders is to take a taxi or marshrutka until the border crossing, walk across the border, and catch a new taxi or marshrutka on the other side. No cross-border public transpor...

Re: Tajen Border crossing uzbekistan kazakstan

Hello, thanks for the reply... So... I'm curious, why would that border only be for CIS citizens... I mean, I imagined it would either be open or closed. In my experience of the region (mainly Kazakhstan, but I think a lot applies more broadly) there is a concept of "near abroad" (a kind of leftove...

Re: Dining cars/restaurant coaches on trains

My experience with dining cars on Uzbek slow trains: There should be a dining car on every Uzbek long-distance train (at least I have never been on one without a dining car, though I know no easy way to check online if there certainly is one on your journey). Usually, there is only one dish availabl...

Re: Passing to Abkhazia from Enguri Border

It's still closed for tourists and even for locals the border only opens every few weeks for a few days (so-called humanitarian corridors). As Enguri had a reputation for closing on any minor occasion that could mean a little trouble already a long time before the pandemic, I would not count on it o...

Re: Trains from Khiva to Samarkand

German Railway (DB/bahn.de) is easy to use and good to get an impression, but not always up to date for Central Asia, as they get their data very indirectly: UTI send all their data to RZD, RZD send their data to the European Timetable center (EFZ) and DB show everything EFZ gets on their website. T...

Re: Trains from Khiva to Samarkand

The current online schedule displays no train running to/from Khiva but the night train from Khiva to Tashkent, which stops in Samarkand in the middle of the night. A day train from Khiva to Bukhara was certainly introduced in 2019, but does not seem to run at the moment. My guess is that the train ...

Re: Azerbaijan - Nakchivan corridor

I recently read that Azerbaijan Railways wants to use the agreement to rebuild/reactivate the old railway Zangilan-Meghri-Julfa, which runs right next to the Iranian border both in Azerbaijan and Armenia, used to be a part of the rail line Moscow-Tehran in Soviet times and was closed after the colla...
