Re: Q&A: Door to Hell

I visited the crater in the same periid on year ago. Plebty of yurts at the crater, but they all seemed closed. What did you end up doing? Is it realistic to expect yurts to rent out every night? I did the train option. Perhaps it was possible to let the motorcycle guy that took arrange accomodatio...

Re: Planning my itinerary

There is a Kazakhstan visa page which answers your 2nd quedtion. I would want to do the pamirs asap as it only gets colder. Your first question is too broad. What are your interests, mode of transport etc? But you could fill two months in Tajikistan only. You will need to make choices, but you will ...

Re: Silk Road Planning Advice

Even without Russian I had a great time. There are always ways to communicate without spoken language. Download a translation app, bring a phrasebook and perhaps learn a few russian words. There is enough beaten path in central asia where English is no problem. The level of English in the Tajik Pami...

Re: Central Asia Planning

Well, I am sorry to bring the news, but you are absolutely not ready. If that document shows all planning you did you are lucky to survive one day. /*Sarcasm mode switched off/ you probably did more planning than 99 percent of all independent travellers, especially so far in advance for some of the ...

Re: Qolma/Kulma pass (China-Tajikistan) border crossing reports

Hi all, we passed the qulma pass border on July 31th from Tajikistan. 3 of us, 2 from Croatia and one from Australia. We started from Murghab very early and arrived to tajik side of the border slightly before 9 (tajik time) and waited for the border to open until 10 (tajik time) . On Tajik side eve...

Re: Khorgos border crossing Q&A (Almaty - Urumqi)

Yes, I went freely last year. But from what I gathered that is a thing of the pass. Permits, guides, tourgroups is the available flavour now. I have heard the suggestion, but no story of someone actually doing it, that with a paki visa you are allowed, perhaps meaning that you can get a permit, to g...

Re: Q&A: Door to Hell

Last november I went there (mybquestion was rhetorical). I went from the train station to the maon road, at the police post there I found a motor guy there who wanted to take me. Not a very reliable service, turned out his lights did not work, so had to leave before it got really dark. So check that...

Re: Q&A: Door to Hell

Isnt the train option cheaper? Considering you get a bed with it. It definitely is qhen you go solo.
