Re: Soviet installations, relics, monuments etc

There is an abandoned soviet military base a little bit east of lake Zorkul. There is a nice broken half track with a red star. Other than that, it is not so interesting, with some crumbling buildings. It is a detour from the Pamir highway, and I think it is one that you will find it hard to get tra...

Re: Diesel quality in Kazakhstan?

In Kazakhstan you can sometimes see that they offer Euro 5 diesel next to normal diesel. I don't know what you get to a fuel station that just sells diesel. But when you see the Euro 5 diesel I would immediately fill up there. Maybe Kyrgystan is okay too. I would go for the best looking (brand) fuel...

Re: Pamir Highway by camper

Well I don't know that Norwegian ambulance, what kind of car it is. Our car was a Norwegian Red Cross car, used in some of the search and rescue missions (8 seater 4x4 van) and it made it :) But most of these Mercedes vans have a very short first gear, so that helps alot if you have little power. An...

Re: Pamir Highway by camper

Well, other people have successfully extended in Khorog. But not everybody. We don't speak any Russian. We also said that the road was very bad (obviously) and it is very time consuming. Anyway, his first reaction was a bit angry, but he went into his shed to do the administration, and then he came ...

Re: Pamir Highway by camper

I think a Mercedes 612D should be okay for the main Pamir highway. Those Mercedes busses usually have some ground clearance and a slow first gear, that's great. Don't make to much things that are sticking out on the bottom, that can be hit. You get 15 days, which you can extend at the customs office...

Re: Drones in Central Asia - rules Q&A

I agree, but you could also try to send it to some guest house in Dushanbe. Or buy it in Dushanbe. Okay, it is not like Almaty, but I'm sure you can find a shop to buy a drone there.

Re: Road conditions between Oral and Nukus?

Looking forward to hear about your next part. Because from Beyneu, where you have to cross the railroad to get onto the road to Uzbekistan was the worst.
As soon as you cross the railroad it was horrible tarmac.

Re: Road conditions between Oral and Nukus?

Yes, and it will get worse from there on. From Beyneu onwards it is really bad, and some parts in the first hundreds of kilometers in Uzbekistan as well. Look out for sudden bad patches in a good road. This was status last year, I know they were constructing some new roads so hopefully you will be a...
