Re: Is being a solo, non Russian speaking traveller going to be hell?

Download an offline Russian - English dictionary on your phone (e.g., Google Translate). Use it to type simple sentences with simple grammar as this will translate more clearly. This is what I used when I was in the area recently and it worked fine. I speak no Russian and read none, although it’s po...

Re: Tashkent to Shymkent border crossing Q&A

I passed through here in August 2018. I arrived at about 10 am, which was too late in the day I think. It was pretty hectic on Kazakhstan side. Before going into the building, there were money changers everywhere competing for business. I changed my remaining Tenge, but received less than they'd sai...

Re: Farap - Alat (TM - UZ) border crossing updates

I passed through this border in August 2018. It's closed for lunch between 1 pm & 2 pm. I was allowed through the first check by the car park though to wait in the Turkmenistan building waiting area. Getting through OK. It's good to have some small Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan money (or a couple ...

Re: Penjikent Border Crossing Reports

I crossed this border in August 2018, and it was without doubt the easiest crossing I made in Central Asia (out of 5). Open 24 hours. I took a 7,500 Som taxi to the border, arranged by my hotel. From leaving that taxi and stepping into another on the Tajikistan side took about 15 minutes. I did this...

Re: Tashkent airport: reports and Q&A

Still the older building for departures (I'm pretty sure - it was a pretty tired space). There's a bar, a fast food place, and a cafe in the departure lounge, as well as VIP lounge. There wasn't, when I was there in August 2018, anywhere to change money once through security, and only USD were accep...

Hi,

Does anyone know the opening/closing times of this border? Is it 24-hour?

Thanks

Re: Korday to Shymkent bus

Thanks mate. Made it to Western Bus Station earlier. Got a ticket on a night-bus leaving at 9.30 pm later in week. 8-hour journey, give or take. Border crossing at Chaldovar. Advisable for others doing similar to book ahead as there were only a few seats left. There was also a bus to Tashkent availa...

Korday to Shymkent bus

Hi, I’m currently in Bishkek. I’ll be heading to Shymkent later in the week. I can see 2 ways of getting there for me. One is a minibus to the more distant border, closer to Shymkent near Taraz, and then another minibus the other side to Shymkent. The other, which has been advised elsewhere on this ...
