Re: Cycling in Xinjiang

I cycled across Xinjiang in August 2018. The police of Hutubi County insisted that I be escorted across their jurisdiction - 50 km. Best to stay on the G30 around there.

Re: Urumqi hotels that take foreigners

I cycled across Xinjiang (G30) in August 2018. Camping at Sayram Lake was allowed. No hotel in Dabancheng would take foreigners. Dabancheng was the only town where I couldn't find anywhere to stay at all. I found Trip.com helpful. If they confirmed my booking and then found out the booked hotel didn...

Re: Chinese visa extension Xi'an

I should add that the Xi'an PSB appeared to be giving 30 day extensions. It didn't matter that my itinerary showed I needed less than that - I still got 30 days.

Chinese visa extension Xi'an

The relevant Xi'an PSB is southwest of the old city walls at exit C1 of Taibainan Lu metro station. Foreigners should use the right-hand entrance and go up 2 floors. Staff speak adequate English. To apply for an extension you need: 1. Passport 2. Copy of passport ID page, current Chinese visa and en...

Re: Uch Kurgan border crossing UZ-KG

To answer my own question: I crossed the Izboskan border in July 2018. (My hotel in Uzbekistan had phoned someone and confirmed that the Usk-Korgan crossing was closed.) There did not seem to be any signs to the border, but you just follow the straight road, past every town along it, to the end. It ...

Izboskan border crossing UZ-KG

The border crossing page states that the Izboskan crossing is open for pedestrians. I'm guessing this would cover cyclists too, but has anyone heard about cyclists using this crossing, as a shortcut to the M41?

Re: Iran-Azerbaijan Border Crossing in Astara

Crossed this border by bicycle from Azerbaijan to Iran on a morning in early June 2018. Used the vehicle, rather than pedestrian, lanes. Easiest to find by sticking close to the sea. The process itself, particularly on the Iranian side, couldn't have been simpler. The Kapital Bank on the Azerbaijan ...

Re: Embassy report: Mashhad, Turkmen Visa

Applied for transit visa in Baku. Although I hadn't heard anything in response, I went to the consulate in Mashhad on a Saturday and the lady there said I would be given a 7 day visa, and to complete a form (different to the one in Baku). They wouldn't give me the visa that day (I think because it w...
