Re: Chengdu: Chinese visa extension reports

"Gets pleasure in insulting and humiliating foreigners." To be fair, there's a certain type of bureaucrat that treats Chinese people this way as well. By the way, if you want to use domestic QR codes for payment -- like everyone in China does these days -- you can look into the Alipay Tou...

Re: Kunming: Chinese visa extension reports

Wechat has been promising this for two years now, but nobody's gotten it to work. Lots of people have wasted lots of time fiddling with Wechat, to no use (including me). So don't hold your breath.

Re: Hotan/Hetian experiences?

Pinyin counts!

The hotel at that address is the Xi Yu Hotel 西域大酒店.

It is on ctrip Chinese and there is a notation that it accepts foreigners, so you can book online.

Re: Hotan/Hetian experiences?

Offhand I can't find any Xi Ju hotel in Hetian.

There is though the large Xi Hu ("West Lake") hotel. Is this it:

Just a reminder to those reading this fine report that the intensive searches by customs are peculiar to land borders in the West, and sometimes with Laos. Elsewhere you can expect to bring in your LP without problem.

Re: From India to Belgium without planes

Remember, the Karakoram Pass closes over Winter, exact dates depending on weather conditions.

The Pakistani visa can in any event be difficult to obtain outside your home country (and even then . . .).

Re: Am I getting ripped off on the Silk Road?

There may well be some rules around which mean that different companies and drivers are handling the different countries, so it's not a surprise that a three-country trip adds up. As said, staying in one country will almost certainly be cheaper.
