Re: TRAVEL MATE AND IDEAS NEEDED - Kyrgyzstan From Beggining of September

There's a big event called the World Nomad Games (http://www.monkboughtlunch.com/world-no ... yrgyzstan/) from Sept 3rd-8th that I would highly recommend. The 2014 version was great fun, and this one looks to be even bigger and better.

Re: Obtaining a Kyrgyzstan visa at the land border to China?

These two points have little to do with each other. You're on the list of 44 countries that enjoy *visa-free* travel, thus you don't need to apply for a visa at any point whether land border or arriving by air. So, you're not actually getting a *visa on arrival* because you're arriving to the countr...

Re: Where is the best Kok Boru in Kyrgyzstan?

There's usually a national championship tournament held in Bishkek for Nooruz at the 'Pishpek Hippodrome' southwest of the city center. Ask wherever you're staying, as they'll generally release the schedule for the matches a few days in advance.

As I'm just about to leave the region again! Looking at spending as much of the summer as possible in the Stans though, if you're around then.

Re: Kyrgyzstan in March

If you are looking for snowsports, Pippa, Arslanbob definitely gets high marks for off-piste and the newly-opened ecobase at Jyrgalan (http://www.monkboughtlunch.com/jyrgalan-backcountry-skiing-in-the-tien-shan/) is still off the beaten track for now. Ask about snow on the Too-Ashuu Pass if you're p...

Re: BUY A CAR? THEN TRAVEL...

I imagine you would be able to find *something* to buy without much problem - the issue would be making sure you have all the necessary documentation to have it registered and then take it out of the country to Tajikistan and onwards.

Re: BUY A CAR? THEN TRAVEL...

I know Ryan from Iron Horse Nomads (http://ihn.kg/) in Bishkek has dealt with this a number of times, so he might be a good resource to start with.

Re: Understanding practicalities about trekking in the regio

Rivers are definitely a concern at that time of the year, and sometime you'll find yourself stuck and waiting on a friendly (or at least helpful) horseman to wander by. Your trekking times (and gear load, for that matter) shouldn't be any different in Central Asia than hiking you've done elsewhere. ...

Re: Understanding practicalities about trekking in the regio

To chime in on Kyrgyzstan: You're right that many or most of the valleys around Bishkek are quite hike-able, and actually you can buy a map at GeoID that has suggestions for a number of different routes (though like elsewhere, on the ground the routes aren't marked by anything but livestock trails)....
