Re: Weekly house rental in Almaty - deposits?

We're just back from our stay in Almaty. Although all of the 6 houses we contacted initially requested some kind of deposit be sent, 2 of them eventually suggested/agreed we send ID/train tickets to prove we were genuine instead of deposits. It became easier the closer we got to the date of the trip...

Re: My travel video's of Central Asian countries

Thanks for sharing this Haye. What a great set of videos! I watched your video for Kazakhstan and went through each of your following videos all the way to Uzbekistan. They give a great flavour of travelling through these countries - especially a good feel of life outside the bigger cities. What was...

Re: Weekly house rental in Almaty - deposits?

Thanks for the feeback. If I find a good solution, I'll post it on here.

Something trying to solve this kind of problem is a start-up called pillowz.kz. It looks like early days for them and I'm not sure if they're 100% functional yet, but possibly something for the future...

Re: Weekly house rental in Almaty - deposits?

I meant if you could kick the staff out and ask the hostel to rent the whole property. The reason is because most housing here is in apartment blocks, and hostels may be more likely to have some kind of larger common or outdoor area. I'm not sure where you would find a house unfortunately, hopefull...

Re: Weekly house rental in Almaty - deposits?

I wonder if you could take over a small hostel, there seems to be an overabundance of them maybe one without any bookings for the time period you're looking at. Thanks for the suggestion thl989, but we're really looking for somewhere we can stretch out and enjoy the property to ourselves rather tha...

Weekly house rental in Almaty - deposits?

My mixed Kazakh/foreign family are looking to rent a house for 15 people for a week in Alamty this summer. We've done something similar in previous years in Borovoe (much of the family is based in Astana) and its worked out really well. Unlike Borovoe, we don't have many contacts in Almaty and findi...

Re: Mobile phone registration law in Kazakhstan

A quick update. I left KZ on the weekend - both Beeline and Kcell SIMs kept working without registration.

Possibly something will change in the future, but for now unregistered SIMs are still working...

Mobile phone registration law in Kazakhstan

According to news reports in Kazakhstan, a law requiring mobile phone registration came into force on 1st January 2019. This registration appears to require a Kazakh ID card - I don't know what options there are for foreign visitors / temporary residents. I'm in Kazakhstan since last week, using a B...

Re: Caspian sea ferry updates & questions

I'm not sure if this link has been posted in this (long...) thread before, but it might be a useful way of getting an independent idea of when the passenger carrying ships are likely to arrive Alat (AZ) and Kuryk (KZ) ports:

Re: Adopting a stray and taking her home to EU

I'm on an expat mailing list for Cairo and one of the most frequent conversations there is procedures for taking cats/dogs abroad. I saw a seemingly authoritative post about this recently, so I'll share it here: Getting her into the UK is slightly more procedural. 2 main things - most tricky - you n...
