Re: Osh Guesthouse / Pamir hightway June 2020

Re: your friend's negative review of Osh Guesthouse. It's true, the place is run-down budget accommodation, and they don't always bend over backwards with friendliness. But if you are looking for the people most experienced in Osh at finding drivers, other passengers and sorting out a fixed itinerar...

Re: Flying into Dushanbe

For a single airline, Turkish Airlines from DC or NYC. For good connecting flights, anything that connects to Fly Dubai or Somon Airlines from Germany. But baggage transfer may be sketchy. I don't like Aeroflot as baggage needs at least a two hour layover in Moscow, and if you are late, forget about...

Re: Travel Buddy!!

I've done the trip twice, and I've spent lots of time in Osh hostels watching people try to get groups together to hire a driver. My advice would be to not worry about it too much right now. I've seen people who had already formed a group a couple months ahead of time, and I've seen groups form with...

Re: Trip planning for end September 2020

The passes in the Fann mountains will be just fine in September, and good until the first real October snowfall (which is not always predictable, but maybe late October). Temperatures are no big deal here in September. As for the Pamirs, it will be very, very cold outside at altitude in September. A...

Re: "Exclave of Sokh" (Uzbekistan). Cross or avoid?

Don't worry. You must be looking at an old map or an old route. Every driver between Osh and Batken goes on the new road that avoids the enclave. Use MAPS.ME when you are there to get a better idea of where you are going...

Re: Shahriston pass Q&A

Haven't been on it. But Shahriston Pass is right on the Uzbek-Tajik border, and Google maps shows part of the road inside Uzbekistan (not that Google maps is the authority on borders here). Open Street Maps (and therefore MAPS.ME) shows this section 50 metres inside Tajikistan at two different point...

Re: Tajikistan to Samarkand

By "get another evisa," the poster above means you should do a separate application for a 2nd evisa. Plenty of people do this, the people going to the Afghanistan side of the Wakhan leave Tajikistan with another evisa for reentry already in their possession. So, apply for your evisa. As so...

Re: Going around Turkmenistan with a local girl.

What's her ethnicity? If she's ethnic Russian then she can do as she pleases. If she's ethnic Turkmen or another Muslim ethnicity, then your arrival at her home could destroy her reputation in front of her neighbors. The fact that she lives alone tells me that she's not a regular Turkmen woman, and ...

The bridge has been closed for the last three months (as is the weekly bridge market), as the Taliban control the entire district outside of the district capital/center:

Ruzvai - Nusai border crossing (and market) reports (AF-TAJ)

A few days ago the Afghan Air Force bombed Taliban positions across the river from Kalaikhumb - the main stopover for those who do Khorog-Dushanbe as a two-day drive. Story here in Russian: It says that locals on the Tajik side could feel the shockwaves. I would...
