Re: Young female tourist stranded at Kyrgyz Tajik border

Update: a friend of a friend checked up on her. She's on the Kyrgyz side of no-man's land and doing fine (lots of food and place to stay). She'll get her visa soon and be on her way.

Re: Taxi to Panjakent border

For the trip in reverse I paid $5 for a (not shared) taxi from the border to my hostel on the other side of Samarkand. But I speak Tajik and I was travelling with a Tajik. Your price may vary. As for who can book a driver, I would hope any decent hotel can do that. On the other side of the border yo...

Re: Homestays at Alauddin lake?

The day hike I refer to is from Artuch alplager to Kulikalon, and then through Alauddin pass to Alauddin lake (with an overnight there). I met Russians with bags full of climbing gear who passed me the same day and were going even further. For reference, one time I started in Dushanbe at 9am (switch...

Re: Homestays at Alauddin lake?

The hike between Vertikal Alauddin and Alauddin Lake takes about 20 minutes. Vertikal Alauddin closes for business very early, like maybe even after the first week of September (check the Russian part of their website). There are no homestays at Alauddin Lake, only places for tents. There is a homes...

Re: Two questions about trekking in Tajikistan

For water, it depends on the mountain range. In the Fann Mountains you will be fine with a 1 litre bottle, but at lower elevations you will occasionally be filling up from a stream/river with a slightly boggy/swampy taste (if you don't know the best spots ahead of time). At higher elevations (above ...

Re: Shir Khan Bandar - Panji Poyon (AF-TJ) border updates

I spoke today with someone who crossed into Tajikistan here recently. He took a shared car north from Kabul and was close to two Taliban attacks on the road as it went through Baghlan. No Taliban checkpoints through Kunduz Province, luckily. At the border neither side recognized his e-visa and they ...

Latest Tajikistan Stupidity: Bring 10 copies of your GBAO/Visa

Within the last week several drivers have warned tourists that they should bring about 10 print-outs of their Tajik visa with GBAO permit for the Pamir Highway trip. Why? Because the guards at the checkpoints have now started demanding to keep a copy of your permit. Why? I don't know. Nobody knows a...

Re: Homestay rules

There was a massive deworming campaign with international support and millions of doses of free meds. Hopefully that greatly reduced the prevalence. As for why it was so prevalent, I don't have the medical journal article in my hands, but I did hear something about the infections being mostly about ...

Re: Homestay rules

I know a lot of expats (who travel in all conditions in Tajikistan) who also have access to excellent medical care at home and I have never heard of any of them being diagnosed with worms (it requires a stool or blood test). Doesn't mean that it doesn't happen (not something you post on Facebook abo...

Re: Homestay rules

Worms? I haven't heard about this here in Tajikistan, likely because they overcook most meat (or relentlessly simmer it in the soup for a long time). No chance for the eggs to survive... But you can get bacterial stomach problems from nearly anything here, including veggies and fruit. As for cooking...
