Re: Trip Kazakstan Manghistau

I was in Aktau in April this year. The roads immediately around Aktau were fine, plenty of amenities/petrol/etc. Main highways should be good for travelling on. We did a long day trip to Sherkala, valley of balls, Sultan Epe and other sights - if you wanted to drive to places like this, the roads ar...

Re: Teaching Opportunities in Kazakhstan?

Yes, Astana is a fascinating place, well worth a visit and a short flight (or longer train!) away. Almaty is a nice city in itself, but the surrounding mountains really make for a beautiful location + there's good skiing, nice lakes and the Charyn Canyon reasonably close by, amongst other things. I ...

Re: Teaching Opportunities in Kazakhstan?

I'm an Astana resident but there are plenty of opportunities for native English speakers up here, as Almaty is a larger city I would imagine similar opportunities exist. To teach in local language schools minimal qualifications are needed - I know people with no qualifications who have successfully ...

Re: Kyrgyzstan in winter

Yes we had a few near misses on the road from Cholpon-ata to Karakol, I was the only one (aside from the driver) who was awake and I witnessed some pretty hairy moments, driving is certainly an experience in itself! I'm a bit of a novice Lenin-bagger so i'll see if I can head that way - seems there'...

Re: Hotel Registration Problem in Uzbekistan

I had a similar experience of not having my slips checked when exiting at the Dashogas/Shavat border crossing, entering at the Farab crossing and maybe Tashkent airport too, the other 6 in my group didn't think theirs were scrutinized either. However, all the advice states to carry your registration...

Re: Travel plan for ~one month

I'd agree with the advice above. Astana has some interesting architecture, but it's easy enough to see in a day or two. Aside from that there's not a vast amount to do here. Almaty is more interesting but again most sights can be seen in a day or so - unless you're traveling out to the Charyn Canyon...

Re: Kyrgyzstan in winter

Thanks Steven, Yes Jeti Oguz is lovely and easy to visit from Karakol (although last time I was there our group had to start the long walk back to J-O village due to lack of traffic!) - I think the Kyrgyzstan first timers would appreciate a trip there. I've briefly read about the sanatorium, that co...

Kyrgyzstan in winter

Happy New Year, A group of us are traveling to Kyrgyzstan for a week in early February - skiing is the main priority for most of the group so we'll be heading to Karakol. However, i'd like to check the feasibility of other potential activities for those who wont be skiing everyday. We're all residen...

Re: Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan Itinerary

Hi midnight, Thanks for your advice. As it turns out we had to remove Kugitang from the itinerary as it was getting really expensive and rushed, so we have gained more time in Samarkand and also some more stops on the route in Turkmenistan at a more leisurely pace. I'm disappointed to not see Kugita...

Re: Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan Itinerary

Salem Steven! Thanks for your reply and advice - if we can get it organised it will be a hectic but fantastic trip - we've all got the summer to relax after so it's well worth it! My original itinerary involved starting with Tajikistan in Dushanbe and onto the Fan Mountains, with onward travel to Sa...
