Re: Current road conditions on the Pamir Highway

1 very long day from Dushanbe to Khorog, another day Khorog to Murgab, one more long day Murgab to Osh. But the more interesting part of the region is along the Afghan border (i.e., Ishkashim, Bibi Fatima, Yamchun) where there are jeeps/marshrutkas from Khorog to Langar and points in between but no ...

Re: Itinerary for a 3 weeks trip to UZ and KG

Just curious why you are devoting 3 days to Song Kol. Is it for a horse trek? The standard trip tends to be 2 nights - one in the woods somewhere and the next at the lake with a morning departure back to Kochkor by car. I did not do the horse trek but went to the lake and did not see the big deal as...

Re: Travel plan for ~one month

1. Last July, I bought an Almaty-Shymkent platzkart ticket the day before I left. Train was pretty packed. Obviously not same route but I think you'd have no trouble a couple days in advance. 2. Share taxis from Dushanbe to Ayni/Fan Mts left from the cement factory ('tsement zavod') a ways out of to...

Re: Pamir trip report

No, not really an overall cost off the top of my head as it was many months ago. Overall it's pretty cheap except for the jeep trips first from Dushanbe to Khorog then to Osh. Look into the flight to Khorog, supposedly hard to get tickets but not much more expensive than the awful jeep ride.

Re: Overland Route: Kazakhstan - Mongolia

Did you go to Mongolia? According to Wiki there is a bus from Astana to someplace in Mongolia that I can't locate; the bus goes via Russia Altai and I'm scouring the web looking for anyone who's done it.

Pamir trip report

The Roof of the World includes Tajikistan's Pamir Mountains as well as the significant mountain ranges of Central Asia: the Himalayas, Tien Shan, and Hindu Kush. After Dushanbe, I spent almost 3 weeks traveling around the Pamir region on the way back to Kyrgyzstan. There were huge numbers of tourist...

Re: GBAO current situation

Seems prices have doubled at Osh Guesthouse. If it's the same place I spoke to by email, it's $90 and they would get 10 days GBAO. If you need more than 6 or 7 days, which they are handing out at the moment in Bishkek, definitely go to Dushanbe first and get your permit there. We just preferred to ...
