Re: Security situation in Xinjiang - leave your thoughts

I'm back from Xinjiang, where I've spent two weeks in august. Here is what I can say about it. First, I could visit all the cities I wanted : Urumqi, Turpan, Korla, Kuqa, Hotan, Kashgar and Tashkurgan. Second : the situation was less tense than expected. I had decided to enter Xinjiang by plane fro...

Re: Qolma/Kulma pass (China-Tajikistan) border crossing reports

Found this surprisingly easy. I've done some freelance journalistic work on China before (although I was entering on a tourist visa for purely touristic purposes) so I was a nervous as hell. Especially since I was entering a few days before national day, and the 70th anniversary - very sensitive tim...

Re: Qolma/Kulma pass (China-Tajikistan) border crossing reports

I was having dinner yesterday in Dushanbe with a Chinese businessman who tried to arrange me to go with a truck from his company to Kashgar - result was the border shuts 28th September for Chinese national day celebrations and doesn't reopen until 4th October. Less sure about reopening date, and 28t...

Re: Beshariq border crossing (Uzbekistan to Tajikistan, Fergana Valley)

Took a taxi from Kokand to the border for about $6-8 dollars (can't remember), whole car (was with a local beforehand though, who negotiated price), border was super easy, didn't even print my Tajik visa. Once through, a handful of taxi drivers, ended up paying either $15 or $25 for a whole car (aga...

Re: Oybek - Buston (UZ-TAJ) border crossing

Tried to take the bus today Sep 11 from Tashkent bus station and they said no bus today,. First person I asked said no bus tomorrow or day after and didn't know when next bus would be. I phoned up and lady said none today and didn't know if there would be one tomorrow. Bear in mind my Russian is pre...

Re: Two passports at Xinjiang border

Will do - is it also a good idea to be honest about speaking Chinese? I was told not to, but I'm thinking... If I go in pretending to be clueless, and then their Public Security Bureau people see I can get by, maybe they will be suspicious... I'm not sure how much border guards would talk to interna...

Re: Aktau to Nukus by train

Aktau > Nukus Bought tickets for 3rd September train at a travel agent near Medet Hostel for 14,000 KZT, although remember the same train on 1st was 18,000. Lady told me to go there an hour early to exchange invoice for ticket, and pointed out time on ticket 11:12(or 11:10? Can't remember) was Astan...

Two passports at Xinjiang border

I'm planning to cross into Xinjiang from Kazakhstan end of the month. I posted separately about electronics and got some helpful responses. I just thought of something else potentially problematic... I have two British passports. The older one has my Chinese visa in it and the newer one I've been us...

Re: Electronics at the border

Enter China with a clean machine and keep it clean. Encrypt and load everything to cloud storage -- places like Backblaze are not expensive these days -- and don't reload it until you've left China. Consider doing a fresh install of your OS first. Thanks - so (sorry I'm bad at tech stuff), is this ...
