Will do - is it also a good idea to be honest about speaking Chinese? I was told not to, but I'm thinking... If I go in pretending to be clueless, and then their Public Security Bureau people see I can get by, maybe they will be suspicious... I'm not sure how much border guards would talk to interna...

Enter China with a clean machine and keep it clean. Encrypt and load everything to cloud storage -- places like Backblaze are not expensive these days -- and don't reload it until you've left China.
