Re: Shahriston pass Q&A

I went along this road by bike the year of the Shakhriston tunnel opening. There is no border crossing if you stay on the road, but of course you must not get off the road towards Uzbekistan. The concern is that since 2013 this road suffers the same fate as the Anzob Pass road: it is no longer maint...

Re: Going around Turkmenistan with a local girl.

I may be wrong if it changed since 2017, but as far as I know, turkmen citizens must get a permission for hosting foreigners. Otherwise, foreigners have to stay in accredited hotels, or camp in their tent or van.

no. I met tourists who rented a 4x4 in Almaty, and were allowed to drive themselves in the park.

Re: Bike cases storage in Almaty

I think any hotel will be happy to keep them for you. You will need to hitchhike a truck or rent a minivan to transport your bikes to Charyn I left my bike case at the hotel for almost 1 month (it was Hotel Resident, half way between airport and city center,). I also started my bike trip in Kökpek....

There were more than 10 tents when I was there last week, including a small bus of russian backpackers Unfortunately I could not go to Ak...

Re: Charyn Canyon by bicycle

was in Charyn canyon a few days ago. Entrance fee for cyclist was 752 KZT. This is valid for several days + nights ; 3 of us actually spent 2 nights in the canyon. The water of the river is suitable for drinking after purification (filter or boil or UV or pills). I did not try to drink it as is. A g...

Re: Altyn Emel Q&A

as I am late compared to my optimistic initial shedule, I am considering visiting Altyn Emel on my way without going back to Almaty ( I am now in Zharkent ). How easy or difficult is it to get permits and share a tour starting from Basshiy, and then find a taxi (shared or not) back to Almaty or Kapc...

Re: Karkara valley (Kegen – Tup/Kensu) border

crossed this border on my way from Kegen to Yssyk Kul, by bike and with a french passport, on july 31. Open from 8 am to 6 pm. Border crossing was easy and pretty fast, they just asked me to open my panniers on the kazakh side but did not really look at the content. Note : 2 sections of pretty rough...

Re: Almaty to Kegen in the afternoon

probably too late for you, but in case another traveller jas the same question : I went to the Sayakhat avtovokzal in Almaty at approximately 9 am. There I could easily find a taxi who was ready to drive me to Kegen for 25000 KZT. I stopped on the way in Kökpek, for 19000 KZT, about 3 hours later. I...
