For Iran Teheran 3 days ia bit much. There's some things to see there; but the city is quite polluted, traffic is horrible...; it's not the highlight of a visit to Iran. I would try to see something else in Iran as well; though of course since you want to stay in the North you won;t be able to visit...

I can confirm that it's very safe. I am not UK/US though of course. I would really encourage this country as a first time travel to Central Asia. people are friendly and there's so much to see. Crossed this border this summer; on foot. From Iran to Azerbaidjan. Very easy, abeit chaotic and full "special price for you my friend" people around. On the Azeri side it did look VERY chaotic. I waited one hour I think; I had some UK guys in front of me where there was a lot of questions...

Crossed the border last month, on a train from Baku to Russia. The border cops were a bit annoying saying only locals can travel on this train, after multiple discussions they let me trough.
