Re: Security situation in Xinjiang - leave your thoughts

The analogy is that the level of security checks that people go through can be compared to the level of security checks when you roam around in Israel/Occupied Palestine. If visitors can put their expectations on that level and they are fine with that, then they should go. Otherwise, it is probably...

Re: Security situation in Xinjiang - leave your thoughts

Southwestern Xinjiang, Kashgar, Hotan and Aksu border Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Fergana Valley, and are dominantly Uygur, more than 90% in Kashgar and Hotan, more than 70% in Aksu. Re: Kyrgyzstan

I'm pretty sure no type of bicycle can cover 17,000 km in less than 14 days. (Heck, it would be difficult even on a motorcycle.)

A touring bike would seem to be what you're after, though.

Re: Wanting to travel to Uzbekistan from Kyrgyzstan by land

No share taxis cross the border. You can take a marshrutka from Osh to the border, then on the other side you can find share taxis. Maybe you can find one for Tashkent, but Andijon will be much more common. Then get another share taxi or take the train. http://caravanistan.com/transport/bus-shared-t...

Second paragraph of the Russian visa page here states:

"For a Russian transit visa you need proof of onward travel (transport tickets from Russia to another country) and a visa for the country of destination..."

Re: Two itineraries for two weeks in Kyrgyzstan

I'd echo Tomas about itinerary two (think I said the same about Karakol direct to Kochkor and Song Kul last time). Also, for itinerary one, it really isn't consistent with public transport at all. Everything south of Kochkor will require private transport. I'm not even sure that Kol Suu to Osh in on...
