In Khiva, I've managed to get Som from the ATM just inside the main (West Gate) of the old town with a Mastercard. I'd pretty much given up trying the MC as it never worked in any ATM I tried, so was very shocked when the money appeared! No MC sticker on the machine.

Khiva-Bukhara train via Turkmenistan?

Hi! I've booked the Khiva-Bukhara train tomorrow (26 Sept), which continues to Tashkent (dep 1428, are 2233, train 056>|<). I assumed it stayed inside Uzbekistan but I've just put it in on Google maps and it shows the train running inside Turkmenistan for most the way. There are no stops between Urg...

I got a free TCell SIM card at the airport (opposite the exit in arrivals hall). The lady took a photocopy of my passport and said the SIM would be active in 10 mins... It never worked. Today I asked at a TCell office who said the lady didn't activate it. They sold me a new card for 40 Somoni for Gb...

I just got back from the Lake. Took a taxi, was KZT14,500 including waiting time. There was one check point at the bottom to the hill (KZT1000), but that was it. We were surprised how busy it was at the top, with a few minibuses of Indian tourists and a little coffee van set up. No police, no check ...
