can you wait another month? I am meeting someone in March who should definitely know the answer to your question.
That would be great, thanks!

My trip - if it works out - will only start by mid-April.

Re: How to book hotels/train/airplane

My personal advice to ivo84 would be to skip Mashhad from the itinerary. Trying to do so much in just 5 days seems quite impossible and leaves you just a little bit of time in each town. Assuming that you are there for touristic reasons. If you do want to go there, you can take the night train from ...

Re: How to book hotels/train/airplane

OK, I just assumed that this is not really a forum where people on business trips or people searching for luxury hotels end up. I might be wrong, of course. Most guidebooks will give some contact data of hotels, so he can make reservations that way. Calling might be a bit expensive however. You will...

Re: Trip KAZ > KYR > KAZ > KYR > TAJ > KYR

Well, for most of the time, I travel alone and make the most of my days, so I am quite efficient. Also, in the beginning of October it was not really possible to find a group to do a tour through the Pamirs, so I spent less time there than expected. In any case, my highlights are several. Of course,...

Re: Turkmenistan transit visa poll

I know. The only thing is that I won't be cycling, I just want the most of days. But I assume that the mode of transportation is not stated on the visa, so I could "change my plan" afterwards.

Re: Latest situation in Afghanistan?

From the border to Mazar you have to take a taxi. Driving anywhere else in Afghanistan is not recommended. Illegal checkpoints are popping up and the situation is getting more unstable. I might have some more info on driving to Bamyan soon, but from what I hear now it's not a good idea. Kunduz is d...

Bamyan - Did anyone go here in recent times?

If so, can anyone tell me whether the land route, either from Kabul or from Mazar-e Sharif are safe?

I know there are short flights from Kabul, but if feasible I would prefer to travel by land.

Re: Transit visa Kazakhstan > Turkmenistan > Afghanistan

Great, that saves me from having to get an unnecessary visa. I will pay the embassy a visit anyway, but it's good to be informed beforehand.

Did you try this route yourself? I hope that, being the longest possible transit route, it will get me 7 days.

Re: Transit visa Kazakhstan > Turkmenistan > Afghanistan

Alright, that's good to hear. But will I need to prove that I come from Kazakhstan (by showing a flight ticket or something like that)? Or will my point of entrance to Turkmenistan be fixed, so I have no other possibility? I can imagine that they might suspect people to try to get a transit visa by ...

Re: Azerbaijan to Russia

I suppose the only difference is that you won't have to use a marshrutka. If all your paperwork is in order, I don't think you will have a problem.
