Re: Backpacking in Kyrgyzstan: Book in advance?

Unless you need any luxury, there is no need to book far in advance. In smaller towns, any local will help you finding a place, if you didn't find some addresses yourself. In some bigger, more popular places in Kyrgyzstan you could book a hostel a few days in advance to avoid having to find another ...

Re: driver in Sary Tash or Karakul

I was there in October. No one will take you across the border for several reasons (not having a passport, not having papers for the car, having to drive back without passengers). In the end, I found someone to drive me until 1 km (and as such, out of sight of) the Tajik border post. It's not cheap ...

Re: Russian visa for baikonur town

If you know some local (I guess you don't since you are posting here) they might get you a special permission to enter. With neither permission nor tour, there is no reason to get off at Tyuratam station.

Re: Current road conditions on the Pamir Highway

People transport everything and in large quantities in all of Central Asia. If you don't mind your bicycle being tied to the roof of a car, you will have a lot of choice. Arranging private transport in advance seems a lot of effort to pay a way too high price.

Re: Border crossing Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan (Isfara-Batken)

I crossed this October from Isfara to Batken on public transport. Very easy, nothing special. Within 15 minutes it was done. The ride in total took less than 1,5 hours.

Re: Azerbaijan to Russia

I went from Grozniy to Makhachkala to Derbent to Azerbaijan in September 2015. I walked around freely everywhere and didn't encounter any problems. I got a few looks, but nothing that made me feel uncomfortable. Just some angry people pushing me and each other in front of a bank and saying (probably...

Transit visa Kazakhstan > Turkmenistan > Afghanistan

Sorry if someone feels that the Turkmen visa thing already has too many topics, but for this particularly transit visa I only found an old topic from 2,5 years ago. Maybe someone has new experiences to share. I would like to travel from Kazakhstan to Afghanistan, hoping to get a maximum amount of tr...

Re: Turkmenistan transit visa poll

Does anyone know whether it helps to write that you are going to cycle? Or is the refusal rate for cyclists higher? My idea would be that cyclists would might easier get the higher amount of transit days as they are naturally slower. Though there is always the risk of overplaying your hand if you as...
