Re: Any cheap flight options to/from Ulaanbaatar

There are cheap flights from Kazakhstan to Novosibirsk, from which you can travel through Siberia to western Mongolia and then to the capital. Obviously that requires a Russian visa and more time but I found it to be an interesting itinerary that I'll try in the future. You can then cross the border...

Re: Uzbekistan new registration system from July 2018

gaetandzoni to be clear did they ask for your registration at the border? Are you sure you didn't offer it to them? Because I was not asked for registration, the reports on what the law says (re: it's the hotel's responsibility now) would indicate they don't check, and other traveler's have said the...

Using Yandex taxi app a ride to the airport should be 1500 tenge so you can stay wherever you want, not necessary to be near the airport. Personally I would choose option A

Re: Tadj currency exchange from Samarkand to Panjikent

You will get a bad rate at the border but useful to get some pocket money. Get it on the Uzbek side, my taxi driver stopped to let the exchange guy in.

In Penjikent plenty of banks, might run into trouble at lunchtime some or all of them close. I was ok just before 12.

Re: Arranging travel in Penjikent

Lonely planet has this one correct, penjikent-6th lake: walk down the street that goes downhill alongside the bazaar and there is a gravel yard about 200m down. From there find the 4x4 (when I went one was on the right side). 40 somoni. When it's full it goes, we didn't leave until 2:30pm. The drive...

Shymbulak to Big Almaty Lake Trek

I cross referenced a lot of stuff to plan this hike but in the end one source did most of the work, this guy: https://x-travels.ru/gornye-poxody/pereval-turistov/ . The only difference being I joined the trail from the top of Shymbulak combi 2 (the top of the resort). Download and follow his GPS tra...

Re: Big Almaty Lake: experiences

Just yesterday I hiked north to the lake from Touristov Pass (I had been hiking from Shymbulak for two days). I stopped and refilled my water at a stream in sight of the lake, then walked along the lower road until it ended and went higher along the east side (opposite the observatory side). At the ...
