Re: Travel in Chechnya & Dagestan: is it safe?

I'm intrigued, does anybody have any blog posts/articles about day-to-day life in modern day Chechnya or Daghestan to share?

Re: Kashgar Old town youth hostel- closed?

I think they can't accept foreigners anymore. The Maitian hotel/hostel (now trading under the "Lakeside hotel" name) was open and accepted foreigners as of earlier in July.

Re: Feedback on our itinerary

I concur, two days in Osh are a bit of an overkill.

Re: Sary Tash guesthouse reviews

I’d really recommend Pamirextreme guesthouse. It’s the last house in the village as you go south on the China road.

Why? Well, it has: hot water, decent wi-fi, good food and a great host in Shamurat. Price is $20/night for a bed including breakfast and dinner, both good.

Re: Restaurant recommendations in Almaty

I really like Darejani, Momo and the restaurant with the logo of a chicken (Coco?) all on the same street, Kunaev. Prices might be a bit steep for a backpacker’s budget but hey, we are what we eat!

Re: Irkeshtam pass report – Kashgar, Xinjiang to Sary Tash, Kyrgyzstan

Long and rambling post, detailing my experience doing Sary Tash to Kashgar on 11/7/19. I left ST at 08.00 Kyrgyz time and got in Kashgar at 19.00 Beijing time, 17.00 Kyrgyz, so all in all some 9 hours. Not bad going. Shamurat, the owner of Pamirextreme guest house, took me to the border on his car f...

Re: Alcohol or Tobacco Branding, Signage, Stickers Decals on cars

I was politely advised by a military cop in Uzbekistan not to show my "Cerveza Cusqueña" t-shirt around. I don't know whether I was more impressed by the fact that the fella knew Spanish, didn't ask for a bribe or expressed himself in a somebow broken but understandable English. Personally...

Re: Onward tickets needed?

No one asked me for onward flights when I visited Uzbekistan, only length of stay. China, on the other hand, did. No clue on Kazakhstan as I don't need a visa there, sorry.

Hi Eluna

I'm in Osh from July 7th, doing a trek in the Alay on 8-9-10/7, with guide but no porters ('cos it's cheating!). PM if interested.

Re: Travel safety in Iraqi Kurdistan?

One of the travellers I follow most in the Internet has been in Kurdistan and Rojava at the height of Daesh's reign of terror. His reportage is here: https://www.dsw-photo.com/Travel/To-The-Frontlines-Against-ISIS Now, I can't vouch for him or recommend doing what he's done, but I know he's a scrupu...
