Re: Best Country/City for Shopping in Central Asia

Resuscitating this thread for a quick question: I was wondering if there are places, in Almaty, to buy local sports teams' t-shirts and other paraphernalia. I tried (and failed) to purchase the Buxoro PFC home kit when in Bukhara but I'd love to lay my dirty hands on a FC Kairat jersey or, failing t...

That's true, but unfortunately we only have 2 months Off Work.
I'd rather stay a week .....

Re: North Pakistan to Osh via Xinjiang

Hi Jose I'm not really answering your question points 1&2, but... I don't remember seeing a Osh-Urumqi flight at all. Checking the daily departures and arrivals in Kyrgyzstan the only airport linked to Urumqi seems to be Bishkek. Also, are you planning to take the same Kyrgyz-plated rental car f...

Bukhara without a shadow of a doubt. Only one day for either is a shame though.

So one can arrive in Nursultan's Nursultan Nazerbayev airport, drive along Nursultan avenue, study in Nursultan university and... I'm sure I'm missing something else.

Nazarbayev retires?

Don't know what the forum policy on politics is, but I thought useful to share this here: Kazakh leader Nazarbayev resigns after three decades Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has led the country since independence from the Soviet Union, has announced his resignation. In a pre-record...

Re: Pamir highway itinerary help

That's more like it! Many will have a lot of ideas on where to stop on the Wakhan valley; my personal favourites are, however, high altitude deserts so I'd recommend Karakul, Murghab or Alichur and perhaps do a trek around there. As a mean of transport I'd still try and arrange a car + driver if you...

Re: Travel in Chechnya & Dagestan: is it safe?

I can confirm the reports above: I spent 10 days recently in Dagestan, and 3 days in Chechnya. Did not get any feeling of unsafety at any point. People are indeed fantastic. Dagestan is a wonderful place. Chechnya is a bit boring even, with many of the most interesting sights near the border and th...

Re: Pamir highway itinerary help

As an absolutely absolute minimum I'd say 3

Day 1: Osh-Murghab
Day 2: Murghab-Khorog via Wakhan
Day 3: Khorog-Dushanbe

But in fairness it's a pretty bad way of doing the Highway, and doesn't give it justice. Ah, you'd need your own transport, e.g. a car with a driver, and Day 3 will be knackering.
