Re: Traveling Central Asia with IBS

No idea about your particular disease, just about the toilet situation: - Public toilets are usually of the squat type. Usually, they are not too clean, but neither disgusting. - Toilets on trains are usually very clean when the train starts, but this may deteriorate during the journey. They are mor...

Coronavirus border closures & re-openings

Mongolia has closed its border with China "to cars and pedestrians" due to the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan. It seems that flights continue (for now). Also, the official wording implicates that trains continue to run for now as well, but I would not count on this.

Re: Abkhazia visa on arrival

The 8th of January is not a national holiday in Abkhazia according to the MFA, so it's probably open. Generally, Orthodox Christmas has only one holiday (7th of January), while "western" Christmas has two (25th and 26th of December).

Re: Buying train tickets Uzbekistan - Tajikistan

Thanks a lot for the report, so it seems like Tajik Railways finally sells tickets to Uzbekistan.
The official price is about half of that though*, so you probably were short-changed or otherwise tricked by the cashier.

Re: Early Planning Question (South Korea to Ukraine)

Or maybe alternative plans for starting the trip? A lot cheaper than getting it shipped through China will be taking the ferry to Vladivostok and driving it yourself, although this involves a lot of driving through the Russian Far East, which is not overly interesting (although Vladivostok is actua...

Re: Slight problems booking Russian & Kazakh Trains, any help would be appreciated!

The international timetable change is at the second weekend in December (7th/8th this year). In theory, booking should have opened by now anyway, in practice, it's quite normal that the booking of trains in mid-December is delayed a bit (this applies to both the CIS and big parts of Europe). Just wa...

Re: ATM situation in Uzbekistan

Have they turned off the ATMs happily dispensing USD in the large international chain hotels in Tashkent and Samarkand? I could well imagine that they have an inofficial exception, since the new currency regulations are most probably not supposed to hit (wealthy) tourists and expats...

Re: Uzbek Railways Website Q&A

Thank you for the information! Please note though, that What's annoying is that it used to be the only way to book these tickets within Uzbekistan as physical UTY service centers were unable to book them. Is not entirely correct. The UTY counters are technically able to book all CIS trains and will ...

Hi, thanks a lot for your report! Do you have a link to your source? I searched Google News in Russian and did not find anything.
