Re: Pamir Highway by camper

I think a Mercedes 612D should be okay for the main Pamir highway. Those Mercedes busses usually have some ground clearance and a slow first gear, that's great. Don't make to much things that are sticking out on the bottom, that can be hit. You get 15 days, which you can extend at the customs office...

Re: Drones in Central Asia - rules Q&A

I agree, but you could also try to send it to some guest house in Dushanbe. Or buy it in Dushanbe. Okay, it is not like Almaty, but I'm sure you can find a shop to buy a drone there.

Re: Road conditions between Oral and Nukus?

Looking forward to hear about your next part. Because from Beyneu, where you have to cross the railroad to get onto the road to Uzbekistan was the worst.
As soon as you cross the railroad it was horrible tarmac.

Re: Road conditions between Oral and Nukus?

Yes, and it will get worse from there on. From Beyneu onwards it is really bad, and some parts in the first hundreds of kilometers in Uzbekistan as well. Look out for sudden bad patches in a good road. This was status last year, I know they were constructing some new roads so hopefully you will be a...

Re: Wagah Border (Lahore - Amritsar) PAK - IND

Well, it is not an ordinary border in the sense that they have the border closing ceremony, and there is quite some attention for it as it is the only border between these two countries that don't like each other. But yeah, in terms of crossing it, not a big deal. Nice to hear that nothing changed. ...

Re: Charyn Canyon by bicycle

All the info should still be relevant. On the other side of the river, there are other canyons as well. It is quite a ride into a dusty dry area (washboarding roads etc) but it will allow you to camp out in a canyon all by yourself. We found it awesome, but we were with a car, so I'm not sure how mu...

Re: Restriction also for cars / trucks entering Iran?

We took that border the other way in 2012, when it had just opened. I guess it improved, but not much. It was very busy at the time. Had to pay export tax for the diesel I was bringing out of Iran! (no, it was not import tax in Turkey) They ask for whisky because you are not allowed to bring alcohol...

Re: Topography Map

Alternatively, put OSMand on your phone and download the extra maps including the contour lines.
(but I understand that you want to have paper maps)

Re: Driving from Kazakhstan to Mongolia - Russia-Kazakhstan Border Road

Hi, it does not really work that way. First of all, those border crossing are not open to tourists, as in, people who are not living the bordering countries them selves. Check out the GREEN markers on this map: https://caravanistan.com/border-crossings/ Secondly, you would already need special borde...
